Oil Leaks

Netters,

I've replaced my oil cooler tubes and hoses and have been battling oil leaks
ever since. The new tubes are stainless and the hoses are braided stainless
over teflon. I reused all the OEM brass fittings. I've tried the Parker
copper sealing washers as recommended by Cinnabar and have gotten it down to
just two leaks.

The first is the return line from the radiator. I've retightened it twice
and slowed it down greatly, but now I'm concerned that if I go any farther
I'll overtighted it and damage either the hose end or the radiator fitting.
Any advice on how much torque either can take? I'll take that connection
apart this weekend and replace the sealing washer with another to see if
that helps.

The second is at the oil filter. I'm hoping it's a bad filter(replaced at
the same time I replaced the tubes and hoses), but in 30 years of wrenching
on my own vehicles, I've never gotten a bad filter before. So, I'm
beginning to suspect a problem with the adaptor. Are replacement adaptors
available? I've seen similar pieces in Jegs and Summit Racing catalogs -
are these compatible? I'll likely pick up a new filter this weekend, but if
that doesn't fix it, then I'm taking a hard look at that adaptor. BTW, I
also replaced the gasket above the adaptor when I did all this and the leak
doesn't appear to be coming from the top of the adaptor.

Hi Patrick,

You know I'm new to the sweet GMC & GMCNET, But I always thought the
fittings oil/tranny to radiator where of the flared type fittings? Which
inturn does not require much torque to seat, If leaking from hose connection
at radiator then the seats has to be scratched, When hose fittings are
apart, I wipe off fittings m/f with clean rag wipe finger and run finger
around seat surface to feel for scratches on surface of both ends should be
silky smooth (watch the inside ends of flair tho). Or if hose/connector,
guess just bad/worn fittings. Or bad hose new or old. Should show traces
from where leak starts.
But mainly if it is flared fittings it should never have to be over
torqued. But even if new some could have small amount of seepage (on hose)
and be OK, No quick drips tho.

Same with oil filter/adapter. Should be smooth on four ends. Oil gasket
and hand tight . It will seal, Or scratches/cracks are present.

I agree with this. I also put a set of the stainless hard lines and braided
hoses on, and had no problems with leaks whatsoever, and all I did was to
clean the fittings before mating, just as Ron has described. No leaks
whatsoever. If you have washers in flared fittings, that would be certain
death! If these are (as they sound like) JR Slatens parts, then the fittings
definitely do NOT use any kind of washer - they seal metal to metal!
