I have become quite fond of the K&N oil filter. It seems to be well constructed
and has a unique feature of a hex nut built on to the bottom for very easy
install and removal with a socket.

Also, while changing your filter you should change the gasket on the remote
cooler adapter just above the oil filter. Use the old gasket from your current
filter. Simple to do and could save your engine (that where I lost mine) as it
probably has never been changed.

We are going to start getting down to business around here now as weather is
getting better.
So 1st. job to change the oil. Already have the Synthic Oil 15-50 Mobil now
need to shop for Filter.
Have the long list of filters for 455 already.
Would like to hear what Filter Name and # some are using and also is there
any we should stay away from?

Here are a couple of sites with interesting info on oil filters.

http://minimopar.simplenet.com/oilfilterstudy.html

http://www.mr2.com/TEXT/oil_filter_test.html

I was told that the Champion Brand, which both studies like (no relation to
the spark plug company) is also sold as Deutsch brand at Auto-Zone.

These are not my opinions, just passing them on.

Personally, I have a 79 Rabbit with 280,000 miles and all I used was the
cheapest on sale filter I could find. I am now more concerned with quality,
but buying cheap didn't seem to hurt that old VW any!.

Marcus:

Gasket change is not applicable to the 403 cid engines.

My 1977 403 has the gasket between the block and oil filter/cooler adapter.
I replaced last year using the gasket from the old oil filter.
