Oil cooler adapter at block

Chuck,

You raise a good point, however, was the oil cooling adapter to oil filter base a hard metal to metal fit or did it have an oil
filter gasket between them? If that was the case it is unlikely that the extension that retains the oil cooler adapter to the oil
filter was torqued to 55 ft lb.

Having noted that your suggestion isn't a bad idea; would anyone that has installed the Dorman or Parker Hannifin o-ring check their
extension and see what you find.

some before filter released. I think the 1 1/4" adapter should be checked every time the filter is replaced no matter what gasket
you use. Maybe this is why factory recommends changing gasket?

availabiity here and need to buy a minimum invoicing amount to get it (I slso bought distributor O rings)

I've done 3 OIL changes and no need to tighten the fitting or evidence of leaking. BUT my filters come off real easy. Ill upload a photo.

Rob, the ones I had issues with were oil filter gaskets. Some were hard and brittle, some had 2 gaskets. All had rubber showing between the cooler
adapter and block adapter The last 3 fresh engines I used the 230 "0" ring from local seal shop. No gasket showing. Torqued 55. I changed filter
after first 50 mile drive in and at 500 miles at first oil change. No leaks and torque was unchanged. Oil filters were hand installed 1/4 turn after
contact.

Dorman 917-036

It is used on some 2002 - 2010 Nissan and Infinity.

I did not buy one. I just checked the part number while I was there.

Today I removed the oil cooler adapter to see what was going on. To my surprise, the 1-1/4" bolt holding the adapter on was barely tight! It barely
took anything with a wrench to remove it, so it was nowhere close to 55 ft-lbs. The key IS in tact as well. I suspect over the years the PO did oil
changes but never replaced this gasket so over time the bolt loosened.

Upon removing the adapter, I discovered what I believe to be the original gasket. It has a unique shape flange to fit EXACTLY in the groove of the
adapter. However, if it is OEM I did replace it with the Dorman 917-036 gasket mentioned here as a 40-year old gasket should not be trusted. The
Dorman barely needs to be stretched to fit, and once on has a nice tight seal. Also the Dorman gasket is made of silicone which I find a plus.
