I have a 403 CID engine with approximately 90 K miles. In the past I've
used Mobile 1 15-50 however today I came across Mobile 1 10-40 high
mileage. OK to switch ? Also I no longer have my oil filter number list. I
have access to NAPA and Advance Auto f/n/a Carquest and O'Reilly's what are
the numbers to use at these places ?
Thanks, Bill

Bill,

I suspect you'll notice no difference using the High Mileage oil. But if
anything, you may use a little more of it because of the lighter weight.

As for the filters, all that information should be in your GMCMI Parts
Interchange booklet. If you're not a member of GMCMI, you should join, if
only for that item.

Or, go to GMCMI.com and access the Parts Interchange there.

Use WIX 51049
Has the largest filter media area so more oil will flow at same pressure.

You are making a better choice with 10W-40. Wix 51258 is standard length as is AC PF 24. THESE ARE FOR 455! 403 and other small blick Olds should be
PF 58 or Wix 51522.

John,

Why wouldn't you want to use the Wix 51049 filter:

Bill,

The 15-50 has always been recommended because it is the last of the easily available products to have the high ZDDP to prevent cam wear. This has
been a fear that many have beaten. It is seems to be less of an issue that we were lead to believe years ago.

Rob. Because in the original post he states 403 SBO. That would cause discharge of all lube oil onto the ground.

What's SBO?

Thanks to all who replied to my initial post regarding the proper oil
filter for a 1978 403 Palm Beach however I'm confused. The GMCMI parts list
calls for a WIX 51045 on a 1978 403 but Jim K says to get a WIX 51049,
however the GMCMI parts lists that filter for a 455 and a 1977 403. Then to
confuse me further John R suggests a WIX 51522.
Sorry to be a pest and BTW I'm sticking to Mobil 1 15 W 50.

William,

To un-confuse you the Wix 51045, Wix 51049, or Wix 51522 will all fit any 455 or any 403 from any year.

Wix 51045: http://www.wixfilters.com/Lookup/PartDetails.aspx?Part=153657

Wix 51049: http://www.wixfilters.com/Lookup/PartDetails.aspx?Part=154643

Wix 51522: http://www.wixfilters.com/Lookup/PartDetails.aspx?Part=78145

They are all the same diameter, however, the 51049 is the "tallest" and therefore has the greatest filter media surface area.

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/455-2f-403-engine-oil-flow-path/p53488-wix-51049-filter.html

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/455-2f-403-engine-oil-flow-path/p53487-wix-51049-element.html

That's why Jim Kanomata recommended it. BTW Jim's primary business is manufacturing filter systems for clean rooms; he's forgotten
more about filters than anybody else here knows!

Sorry if I gave out wrong info. The Olds 307 in my Riviera uses the numbers I posted AC PF58 or Wix equiv. and is same in that it is a small block
Olds. I have no 403 here to look at.

Looking at the parts interchange the PF58 or Wix 51045 is correct for 78 403. This is a smaller diameter filter
For 77 455 and 403 the larger diameter PF 24 or Wix 51258 and 51049 are listed. Not sure if this is correct that in 77 the 403 takes the larger
filter same as 455 but if so I learned something. I don't think you told us year at the get go.
