In my youth, I used to buy old neglected cars, get them running, give them
a good detailing and sell them at a tidy profit. When the crancase was full
of black gook, I'd add a qt. or 2 of ATF and run it for 20 miles or so.
Then while the engine was still hot, I'd do a regular oil and filter
change. I was told that the ATF had a much higher detergent concentration
while still providing some lubrication, but was warned not to keep it in
there too long. I loosened up lots of sticky rings and lifters this way,
making the tired old motors produce less smoke and noise. It might have
been myth, but it sure worked forme.
