Hi folks, I have had it with Frontier phone service. Ever since they took over from Verizon it has been one issue after another. I’m looking to go with a VOIP service such as Magic Jack or Vonage. Any insights on these two or others would be much appreciated.

thanks

Currently using Ring Central for the business and http://itpvoip.com/ for home.

Thrilled with them both.

I wonder, if and why one still needs a landline these days.

I have Vonage. My sister had a MagicJack. Her ISP seemed to take deliberate steps to keep it from working. The last one was limiting her speed to no
more than her plan covered. Rather than upgrade her internet service, she gave up on the MagicJack and got a StraightTalk cell phone.

I have Vonage because I only have to pay about $20 per month for what AT&T would charge more than $60 per month. I have considered Ooma, but, like
MagicJack, I don't know how their business plan will accommodate market saturation. That is, once their sales of new units slows, their revenue stream
won't sustain their infrastructure. Vonage is probably the most expensive of the VoIP services, but still better than throwing money away on the phone
company's landline. And their business plan is viable.

GMC content: One feature of Vonage is you can redirect all incoming calls to your cell phone when you are RV'ing. And you can get Visual Voice Mail
(speech converted to text) and check voice mail anywhere you can get email.

SKYPE. I have been using this for years. Basically, Skype has three levels of service: Skype to Skype, cost is free, Skype out, cost is $30, Skype in
and out, $100. All costs are per year. With Skype in and out, you get a number that people can call (two way traffic). With Skype out, you do not have
a number that can be called. Caller ID will generally show a number, but that number does not tie to you and does not accept incoming phone calls.
Skype is encrypted end to end. Shows only as a digital stream to your ISP.
I use Skype for all my outgoing calls. Provides service to the entire US and Canada. Great for calling those numbers that tend to put you on hold.
Link to Skype is included with Windows 10 distribution. Servers operating Skype are in Luxembourg, out of reach for court action.

In some areas, when the power goes off for a while, the cell towers are
dead, and you won't have a way to call in the power failure for your
location.

Does the internet still work during those instances? (I always forget
that the power infrastructure in the US is only slightly better than any
3rd world country)

I kept my land lines here in Sydney for my ADSL service.

G'day, Peer
It would depend on the location and power source for the internet
connection.

Our internet is slooow satellite, and it usually works for a while,
sometime during the day, whether the local power is on or off.
If your internet is through DSL on your landline, it would probably still
be available.
If it's from your cable company, I have no idea.

I used the G'day salutation because it covers any time zone, and I don't
know where you are now.

Hello Ron,
> Our internet is slooow satellite

do you have internet over satellite both ways? ie. sending and receiving
using the dish? I had people use Internet for the download link and use
dial-up for the upload link. They were glad to have fairly quick
download speeds, albeit fairly high lag.

The DSL that is in use in Germland (and that I came in contact with in
France, Italy and Britain), didn't work without local power. The DSLAM
needs power, or so the telecom company told me.

Oh, and to get back on-topic: I know of two other people that really
like their Skype setups as their landline replacements.

VOIP and VPN generally won't work with satellite internet services.

DSL generally has the same reliability as the incumbent telco. Cable here is terrific, but they also have disrupted the local telco (Frontier).

You know is bad when people prefer dealing with Comcast customer service!

We had Vonage for years in 3 different homes. Never had a problem with it. But a couple years ago I was doing something that involved me unplugging a
VOIP phone and I was trying to remember the last time I had used it. I couldn't remember and asked my wife. She didn't know either. We decided at that
point even $20 a month, or whatever they were charging at the time, wasn't worth it. We've used only our cellphones ever since.

I used to live near Gary. Anza, California is one of those places where cell coverage is still dodgy -- and probably ways will be because of the terrain.

Not wanting to give up our old number, we use Magic Jack with total success. Our only snafu was that our burglar alarm didn't gee and haw with magic
Jack. They installed a cellular product that now works great. It's not a true land line, but Elise doesn't know that SHHHHH.

Since we moved to our new home, we've used Rise Broadband for both phone and Internet service. This is a point-to-point radio frequency service, from
our house down several miles to the center of town. Internet is a little slower than Xfinity was, but phone service is quite good. No weather issues,
even during rain/snow. Only problem is a several second delay connecting incoming calls which causes some auto-dialers (and some people) to give up
on the call.
