Off Topic But Too Good To Not Forward: Your First Car?

My first "car" was my 1953 Willys CJ3B (which I still have). My dad and I salvaged it from my uncle who bought it new for service station use. When
we moved back to PA from Tucson in 1968, dad got wind of it and we rescued it from a barn as a project.

My first 'daily driver' was a 1960 VW Bus that had been converted into a mobile doughnut wagon. Dad bought it for the 5-CCK Onan generator that was
in it. It only had a driver's seat and some counters in the back. I sanded the lettering off most of it and rattle canned it in bright yellow. It
was absolutely gutless. I wanted to bring it back to Tucson when we moved back in 1973, but my dad said it would take a month to get it across the
country IF it would even make it.

I agree about the Fiat's "Fix It Again Tony" is accurate for them. When I got drafted in 71 my sister was driving it when it caught fire outside her
dorm. So I got saved from supporting the local mechanic. At least with that car.
The second car was a 1969 Datsun 2000, yet another bad choice.

My first car was a 1969 GT6+. The floor rusted out in three years, lost second gear about the same time., carburatores ate the rubber diaphrams every
6 months and the clutch seemed to be possessed .
But all in all a lot of fun and good memories.

Mine shifted badly as well . Now I know it was the shifter bushings. Trans I had looked like a top loader. PO had special ordered the combo new. I was
about to put a 302 in it before I killed it Wish I still had it. Funy thing is my 68 mustang has the same smell.

Starting at age 14 and before I could get a license, three doodle bugs, a 1914 model T Ford, still have it and have now owned it for 69 years, three
Corvettes (1954, 1957 FI, 1965 still have), 2 GMC MHs and too many other trucks/cars to count.

1964 VW beetle that seemed to know when my generous G.I. bill check showed up. $100 a month did not go far in the late 60'S. Rate went to $125, as I
recollect, the month I graduated.
Learned a lot on the Bettle.

When family responsibilities forced an end to my dragster driving,
hellraising life style, I purchased a brand new 1964 VW 40 horsepower,
Bahama blue, with a blaupunct Am/FM radio in the back seat. $1751.90 out
the door and down the road. Now I had a wife and family and 2 kids, and for
the first time in my life, no hot rods or race cars or weekends on the road
from one drag racing track to another. Big lifestyle change for me.
Next car was in 1972, traded off the beetle for a used 1968 VW double
cab Kombi with the conestoga covered wagen fabric top over the bed. My wife
cried when that beetle went away. But, we both grew to love that Kombi.
That carried our family in and out of more memory trips than the GMC. Life
goes on.
