I won't be surprised if we call this the Paul "Michelin - Zagat" Bartz guide
to dining and attractions. I'm sure we'll all find this useful as we look
for unusual places.

Now I wish I'd have written down all the unique places I've eaten over the
past 20 years of travels across our great country. I'll post a few that made
a lasting impression as I get things started. I'll post others privately to
Paul, but perhaps he can comment on the 'style' of these so we know if we're
hitting the mark...

This is a bit of the path, South of Fort Wayne. You take 469 to US 33 south
about 15 miles. Great as a destination, or continue on US 33 to
Dayton/Columbus, Ohio.

The Back Forty
101113 US 33
Decatur, Indiana
219-724-3355

Railroad style decor with Burma Shave signs all over the ceiling. Excellent
buffet style dining with something for everyone. Reasonably priced. Easy to
spot, and plenty of parking out back for your GMC. Smoking and non-smoking
available.

_/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/

Take the Middlebury exit (SR 13) from the Indiana Toll road south through
town to US 20 then turn right. The restaurant is on the right hand side of
the road. You can continue on US 20 to Shipshewana and the flea market.

Das Dutchman Essenhaus
240 US 20
Middlebury, Indiana
219-825-9471

Old barn style decor. Family dining for groups of 4 or more is simply the
best in the area. Excellent bakery with Amish goods for sale. Now part of a
growing complex of shops and stores, the restaurant is always good. They
have bus parking, and plenty of room for your GMC. Smoke free.

Hope this primes the pump...

| It just dawned on me that we ought to build a data base of those
| that we've
| discovered along the major highways, for the benefit and
| convenience of all
| GMC travelers. I'm not necessarily talking about national chain type
| restaurants (i. e. Perkins, Cracker Barrel, etc.), unless you feel
| otherwise. I know that this may duplicate such publications as the Exit
| Guide, etc. Any thoughts from anyone on this suggestion??? I'd even
| volunteer to keep the data, al la the "Black list".
|
| If this is something we should do, send me your info, including
| the type of
| food served if applicable, location, including exit number if along
| Interstate highways, etc., privately and I'll compile the list and make it
| available. Perhaps Patrick could be persuaded to eventually post the list
| on his web site??? Or are there any other suggestions??

Mark:

Good start. I'm familiar with the Essenhaus. It's a goodun'.

How about Richards in Auburn?

I can see this project encompasing a more inclusive range than what I
originally envisoned. That is, my thoughts were for those mainly along the
Interstate system, but I know the areas you are referring to and agree that
they should be included.

Looks like we have a start.

What do you think of using a MS Word format for the data? I can use a table
and have sort capability with it. Was thinking of having both a state and
city, and major highway (like the Exit Guide does)list format.

I think an "early" (say '95) version of Word is a good common denominator.
Everybody's got wordpad with Win '95 or '98 and can open the file as they do
Sandy Davis' message compilations. Mac's also recognize the .doc file
format.

wouldn't it be easier to use a spread sheet that could be sorted. Would
make it easier for you also since you would not have to enter them in any order.

Tom:

As I said below, MS Word has sort capability using a table. I would think
that not everyone has the software for or is familiar with navigating a
spreadsheet, which is overkill for this endeavor.

I believe we need a text based (word processor) format so that everyone can
read the file. Word allows you to also save a file in several different
formats.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Paul,
I had trouble initially setting up the Black List as people had trouble
opening the doc file. Ended up making it a generic file. Mac owners still
have trouble with this and have to go to Henry's site so they can make a
choice of files to try to open. You can try the doc files and see if that
works, then if it doesn't you can transfer it over to a generic one.

Roger

Roger:

No comprende "generic file". What did you save it as (i. e. what is the
file extension name)?

Paul,
It is a file name. When you go to "save as" in the window it has a place
for "save as type." I use "Word for Windows (Generic).

Go ahead and use whatever you were going to use in the beginning, then if it
doesn't work for most everyone, you can do the above.

Roger:

I use MS Outlook as my e-mail software, but have it set up to use MS Word as
the text editor. When I click on File, Save As and then Save As Type, I
have what you say below, but minus the word in parentheses.
