Hi Larry,
Check out the Florida State Parks Web Site at:
http://www.dep.state.fl.us/parks/maps/alpha.html
or St George Island SP at:
http://www.dep.state.fl.us/parks/District_1/StGeorgeIsland/index.html
I have never camped at St. George Island - I prefer St. Joseph's Peninsula
State Park (St. Joe's) a little west of St George Island - but I have been
there on a "drive through" to check it out.
My recollection is that the campground is some distance from the
(fantastic!) beach. I believe the beach is used for day trips by the
locals. All state parks that I have visited have pretty nice campsites.
All have electricity (35 amp) and water on site with shower and restrooms
within easy walking distance of any campsite. You may want to make
reservations as the state parks can get pretty full during the "winter
season". Most used to keep a percentage of sites for non-reservation use.
However, I have heard that some (all?) now require reservations for all sites.
One of the reasons that I prefer St. Joe's is that it is a bit more remote
and the beach is just over the sand dunes from the campground (or was
several years - and a couple of hurricanes - ago). Both have shopping
(groceries, supplies) relatively nearby. St. George Island is a pretty fair
sized community of vacation homes and has shopping on the Island as I
recall. St. Joe's is - or was, things change fast in Florida - a bit more
"remote" but there is a small city (Port St. Joe) a few miles from St.
Joe's. When we were last there, however, there was some construction on
Cape San Blas, so there may be shopping for necessities near the park now.
There was also a marina in St. Joe's where you can pick up some necessities.
I'll try to get any info you need if I don't have it, what do you want to know?
Cheers,
Marion Hope
