Here's another story which might benefit fellow GMCers.

Another of the problems encountered on our recent coast-to-coast-to-coast
excursion was an apparently dead starting circuit. It happened twice during
our 5 week trip. The first time we thought the starter had gotten too hot
because it "miraculously" fixed itself when the AAA guy was able to start
it after a 2 1/2 hour cool down period. The second time, a AAA mechanic
discovered that it could be started by jumping the two leads at the
starter. When it happened a third time (blocking our own driveway) we
finally figured out what was causing it.

It seems the key lock portion of the ignition switch had become worn enough
to develop a "hitch" at the point where the starter is engaged. We would
turn the key like always, but nothing would happen. But by twisting the key
a lot harder, it would make the contact. So my "new" mechanic pulled the
steering wheel, put in a new key mechanism (the electrical part was fine).

So if your GMC suddenly won't start, try turning the ignition real hard
before getting dirty or calling for help. Hope this helps someone.

I'll likely post more as I get around to reviewing my notes.
