The name Flex-A-Lite takes me back a few years. I had a '74 Chevy Monte
Carlo with a 454 rat motor. I didn't like the way it ran, so I did a little
head work, a little cam work, an Edlebrock dual plane manifold, a little
carb work, a little exhaust work.
It ran mighty fine -- if you know what I mean. But... it ran a little
hot at idle with the A/C on. They had a long hood, and an even longer fan
shroud. I tried a number of fan clutches, and it just had a little too much
cam goin' on at low rpms. Finally, I put in a Flex-A-Lite, which ended my
problems. (Except a hot soak start problem from the headers).
That fan would be too noisy for a motorhome. On the MC, it didn't matter,
you couldn't hear it unless the windows were open, and also, I didn't really
care as much about noise at that age. It'll be interesting to see what
results you get with your electric fans.
The new stuff today doesn't use anything but electric fans, and you'd hardly
know that they were running. They use the body control computer to pulse
width modulate the electric motors, so they can very the fan speed to only
what is needed. Let us know if you get that exotic. We'll all come over for
a little look see at your project.
