Nice Dipstick Tube - Hole?

Richard,

Thanks - this is another modification I can't take credit for, but I'm sure
glad I have it. I just checked the old records, it doesn't appear on the
bill for the rebuilt tranny (Osburn), so I assume it was done by Ken Frey's
shop who did most of the work for the PO.
There is a small hole in the tube just below the dipstick seal, and it looks
like some fluid sprayed out of that hole and ended up on the master cylinder
and the a/c condensor after going over a pass (tranny temp just above 200*).
Does anybody else have this setup, any problems with this "breather hole"?
There was also some fluid around the breather on top of the chain housing.

When we installed the extended tranny dip stick tube, I was told to drill a
small hole just below the seal to relieve pressure as the tranny heats up
and reduce/eliminate fluid being expelled through the vent. This mod was
done in August, 98, but I couldn't find a record of who advised drilling
the hole. It was explained to me that as long as the tranny was not
overfilled, no fluid should be expelled from the added hole. I suppose if
excess fluid is going to be pushed out, it would be safer and there would
be less of it up there. HTH

No problems with mine. I drilled the hole after having significant problems
with transmission fluid venting out the vent hole on the transmission. I
drilled the hole on the bottom so that water etc can't get in accidentally.
On those rare occasions that I need to top off tranny fluid I either make
certain that the spout extends below the hole or I block it with a rag or
finger.

According to Cinnabar the original dipstick had a groove in the rubber that
allowed air to vent (in addition to the normal vent). The long dipstick
seals completely when the latch is closed. This caused fluid to vent out
the vent hole - I believe when the converter had leaked down - on start up.

Alternatively, you could just leave the dipstick unlatched. That isn't as
foolproof though.

Since your tube hole vented going over a pass, perhaps the transmission
vent is plugged.

Thanks for your reply. I also had some fluid coming out of the rear
breather. I'll check it out this weekend, and install a "breather
extension" at the same time. Maybe the fluid level was just a little too
high.

Just checked out the trans breather picture - NICE!
This is near the top of the to-do list before the Lake Powell trip.
