Hi my name is Chris Worley and I recently bought a 1977 GMC Birchaven and I need parts for the motor. Can anyone tell me what I would tell the parts counter when needing an alternator, exhaust manifold gaskets etc.? I know it’s a 455 engine front wheel drive. Please help.

The parts counter will not be much help since GMC motorhome is not in their catalogs. Sometimes they can pull up a "1973 Transmode" but even then they have bad/no info.

Your best bet is join the GMCMI and get access to the Parts Interchange so you can just give the store a brand and part number of what you need. https://www.gmcmi.com/gmcmh-parts-interchange/

Are you sure you have a 455? Some '77s have a 403.

As for manifold gaskets, I personally went with Remflex RFL-11-003 for my 455.

One way to verify you have a 455 and not a 403 is the number of valve cover bolts.
455 has 10 bolts
403 has 8 bolts

For 455 engine parts you can use 1976 Oldsmobile Tornado

Not knowing how much info you have...the three major suppliers are gmcrvparts.com, in California, Sirum in okeechobee Florida and cinnabar in sandusky, MI. they will know, and likely have, anything you need, beyond them it is more work. Parts interchange mentioned above is invaluable on the hunt. You can also ask at the local parts counter for either a 1975 Olds Toronado if you are looking for many engine parts for a 455, or 1978 Olds toronado if looking for 403 based parts. Rock Auto has a 1973 gmc transmode in their system, as does Advance Auto. Specialists like Dave Lenzi have premium parts for stuff like exhaust gaskets - I have used Felpro over the counter gaskets with limited success. Finding people like Dave happen best when you are active in local and national clubs and have a network, including this forum. GMCMI is strongest national group. If you put some member info in your bio or tag line on this site we can help you find regional clubs

Have your alternator rebuilt at your local starter/generator shop. Don't let your original one go as a core!

Tell the parts counter the same year Toronado for engine parts.
