Just finished installing NAPA steering gear in a 76 Royale. The Pitman
arm was hard to remove and hard to reinstall. Broke a heavy duty (7 ton)
gear puller (Sears replaced w/ no questions asked), second attempt
successful with assist of gentle hammer taps. A difficult procedure for
1 guy, both heavy and awkward.
QUESTION - Has anyone else found that the 1-5/16" pitman arm nut
requires a great deal of torque to replace?

HOW DOES IT STEER???? Should a got the Pitman Arm Puller from Princess
Auto (800-460-7989)for $9.99 (P/N 2990068). I ruined my 3 good jaw 6" puller
(after 3 hours) on it. Put that $10 tool on there and in 5 min it was off in
my hand! What a deal... Say if anyone is interested I'll type up a step by
step of how I changed mine and the parts needed.

Hi Nate, I was thinking of R/Ring my steering box due to leakage. And sure
could use all info I can get to make the job as easy as possible. It doesn't
look that hard but you know how that goes.

Hi again Nate, Saw your write-up on gearbox replacement, Still catching up
to e-mail, and reading from end->up. Now all I have to do is get gearbox
from Jim Bounds and just do the work!!!

Ron,
Glad to help. I wrote a step-by-step and tips and tricks in issue #11 on
howto change the steering box. I'll send it to you. Read it closely as you
view your setup. It's well make alot more sense that way. Hope this helps,
guy...

Ron,
Just drop by your local NAPA dealer and order one of the steering boxes.
Get it locally since they are heavy and frieght would be high. Takes about a
week or less if they don't have them in stock. Thats what I wound up
doing.... also I sent you that write up before I read this. PS... don't
adj. the box afterwards as it won't need any tweeking. And don't be
surprised if your steering wheel is off center. Mine was but it'll be fine
after Jim aligns it.

Nate,
are your instructions re steering gear replacement still WIP or are they
posted already and I missed the URL?

I'm not changing yet, but will be within the next month or so.

There has been considerable discussion recently regarding the
replacement of the steering box on the GMC motorhome. Various sources,
casting numbers, etc.have been mentioned but I don't recall seeing any
reference to whether the "stops" inside the box are of a dedicated
design to prevent turning too sharply for the CV joints on the motorhome
application. This is possibly a unique application for the steering box
and not a consideration in many uses except perhaps 4WD trucks.

Has this point been raised and what was the consensus? I would hate to
see anyone damage some expensive joints by the use of a box with
identical appearance but a subtle internal difference; perhaps the
steering limitation is somewhere other than the box itself.
