New" Seats

This weekend I found great 6 way electric seats from a 96 Olds Aurora
(thanks to Jim Anstett for the lead). I have questions from people who
have installed similar units. What is the beat way of mounting these in
the GMC? If I adapt the current pedestal, the seats will be about 2-3
inches too tall. Should I cut the pedestal or should I mount channel
directly on the floor and eliminate the pedestal all together? I would
like to retain the swivel feature if possible.

Any help would be appreciated.

Eric - I put on GM 6 way electric seat units several years ago. I
removed the GMC seat and cut off the two brackets where they welded
to the tubular frame. I cut them down about 2 or 3 inches and then
rewelded them to the frame. This way my swivel is still stock and I
still have the stock storage box under the seats.

Eric - the "tubular" part of the frame is the frame of the seat
portion. The flat metal brackets are welded to it and go down in a
"U" shape and bolt to the slides. You have to shorten the brackets
that go betwen the seat frame and the slide mechanism. Whey you look
at it you'll see what I mean. UNLESS -- your seats are totally
different from the originals that are in my 1977.

Yes I did. I have another project to do and have the parts. My wife
wants her seat to have a tilt back. I bought a Cadillac seat from a
junkyard that has the same width frame where the back joins the seat.
I am going to cut the GMC OEM seat at that area and weld in the
hinged section from the Cadillac seat. I will then repad and recover
the original GMC seats.I hope to get to this before we leave for the
Mt. Hood convention this next fall.

Emery,
I'd love to do the same thing. Small problem however. Right behind the
passenger seat in my coach is the dinette locker. If I had a recliner
there it would hit the locker during reclining operations. Do you not
have a locker right behind your passenger seat?

My 77 has a dinette with fold down seats. There is a cabinet up by
the ceiling but the seat will clear that when it tilts back. It will
also clear the back of the dinette seat when that seat is up. Are
your dinette seats built with solid backs?

Emery,
My dinette seats fold down, but that's not the problem. The top of the OEM
passenger seat touches the dinette locker when it the full back position. If
a new seat is as tall then it would presumably hit the locker if someone
tried to recline it. At least that's what it looks like to me.

So that's how its done! I'll keep that technique in mind.

I have to keep the overhead cabinet over the dinette for the time being. That's
where the remote 10 disk CD changer, VCR and the other electronic stuff is
located at the present. Besides that's where we store our potato chips and other
snacks as well.

We did the same thing. IT's amazing how big the coach feels with just one
locker missing. Besides, we no longer whack ourselves in the head on the
edge of the cabinet.

I really like the open feel without the forward overhead locker. Makes the coach
seem much bigger. I told Katie that she should leave her makeup and teen
magazines behind. That should free up a lot of space.
