I am on my way to buy a new roof mounted AC/Heat pump and have been looking at the Coleman Mach 8 low profile unit, but there is several other from
Dometic and so on, any recommendations ?

I like the low profile units. The heat pumps put out a lot more BTUs than heat strip. I'd get one with a rotary compressor and with a name brand I
can pronounce.

My Dometic failed the switch ($35) in just over a year. I replaced it with a cheaper switch and a heat/cool selector. Works fine as far as
cooling/heating but I'd go elsewhere because of the failure.

The Mach 8 Heat pump have a heat strip as a option and I would like to have both, no one of the others I have looked at has the heat strip and heat
pump..
But not a large problem as I will have the Suburban furnace for those really cold days

Heat strips are barely worth the trouble to install (easy) or the price ($100 or so). Cube heaters put out more btu's per $ spent. I have one in each
of my a/c's - noise level is high. IMHO not worth it.

Loffen, I would think that the current draw of using a heat pump and heat strip at the same time would exceed the breaker rating.

Loffen,

I have a 15k Coleman Mach low profile in the back (without the heat pump).
And a Atwood 15k upfront with the heat pump (higher profile).

The Atwood beats the Coleman in any possible test. I wish I would of also put the Atwood in the back.
The Coleman is at least 35% louder than the Atwood in the inside of the coach, and the Coleman will not cool to the temps that the Atwood will.
The Atwood will cool to at least 35* F below the outside air temp. The Coleman will only cool to 25*F below outside air temp.
Maybe I have a defective Coleman??
Good luck, and keep us posted on your decision.. scott

I do not think the heat pump and the heat strip will be on at the same time, I guess when it get down to the point where it is to cold for the heat
pump the heat strip will take over

Very interesting on the noise and output, the AC part does not matter much to me here in Norway but as the AC is just reversed for the heat pump the
output should be similar, you gave me something to think on there Scott :)

Air-based heat pumps generally don't work very well when ambient air temperatures go below 40 degrees F.

Water-based heat pumps used on boats also don't do well when water temps go below the same point.

Previous owner of my coach removed the furnace; probably because temps in south Texas don't usually go very low.

As others have commented, electric blankets, sheets, or mattress pads work VERY well for sleeping and electric cube heaters and similar can take cabin temperatures to tolerable levels. Think flannel shirts and sweaters!

Remember, the Cometic has a 40 degree thermostat which shuts it off. It's not going to run below that ambient temperature... and it's not efficient
enough to provide heat below that anyway. 40F, ~~4 C

Ok I will go for the Atwood, I will not get the low profile, I will not get the heat strip but I still have my furnace so that is really no problem, I
like the low noise level, the remote and the price, from RV Parts country I will get it complete and shipped for under $ 725 that will be around half
the price of a Mach 8.
Please post ASAP if you know of a better deal on the Atwood (Model 15031) :)

That seems about right for the price. Make sure you get top and bottom parts.

Dont get too excited about the remote. And the flip down controls. It is easy to operate without, i never use the remote, and the flip down is
hard to flip down.

But i a very happy with my atwood. It does push some air volume and cools very well. I have set the heat side temp at 70 and it maintains the
coach is almost all normal weather i camp in.

I too have been researching a new A/C (without heat pump). I haven't purchased yet, but after reading a ton of reviews, other RV forums etc people
seem to pretty positive about the 15k Atwood and that is likely to be my choice.

The reason I'm posting though is that I was curious about the Dometic Blizzard. And was wondering if anybody had any firsthand knowledge of it and
could chime in. (I guess informed second hand would be fine).

Looks to be a fairly new model I couldn't find any reviews that didn't appear to be machine made. Certainly looks sexy.

The remote will just be nice when I am driving, I will mount a start stop switch for the Onan in the dash so then I do not have to pull over to start
up the AC, pretty nice when you are stuck in traffic :)

I have the Atwood too and am now sentimental for the big knobs on my old AC. Too hard to see!

I've got the low profile Coleman and am happy enough with it's performance...

I've read postings on other forums about a remedy for the noise issue - it involves changing out the fan blade. Actually though - I'm not sure if
that addresses outside or inside noise.

I'm considering modifying it to a ducted system. I'd build a small plenum at the top of the ceiling where I already have a box light fixture there
from PO. It'd also call for an alternative ceiling/inside unit and a thermostat. I also expect that it'd get quiter as the noise is air flow
noise...

Interesting. This is the first tine aeeing that blizzard by dometic. I do not like the dometics we installed in our fiber trailers last year at
all. They are junk in my opinion.

This blizzard is new and maybe they got it right?? I know the dometic uses two fans to keep power and sound down, that blizzaed is still a one fan
model.

There is alot of buying/selling of rv manufactures so who knows who owns who and who is developing what. I tjought atwood was bought by donetic but
still have seen there products on the market unchanged from my atwood i bought a few years ago. It was a new model then. Always changing.

If I were looking for a second opinion on ANY rooftop a/c unit, I would certainly give Leon a call at http://www.fixyourfridge.com/ in Shipshewana,
IN. I think he has helped more GMC owners with his business and knowledge. Just sayin'...

I personally love the Low Profile units as they look less like a CAMPER and
reduces wind drag.
We sell all brads, but the word from us suppliers is that Dometic units are
cheaply made.
