Hi to all . I’m John my wife and I have been intrested in a GMC . I’m a boat builder and pretty mechanical if anyone could steer us to finding a project . I have a 1946 dodge power wagon that has had all the mechanical work done and is ready for paint and interior if anyone wants to trade ? I need an rv more now than a 1 ton stump puller .

John,

There are a number of good places to start. If you really want a project, there are lots out there. Some are much more project than you might want.
You didn't give us a hint of where you are, not even a country. You can fix this in a sigfile.

For reference:
Stripped coaches that don't drive are available often for haul-it-away.
Doesn't run but still has most or the interior are high at about 3K$us.
Run's great stripped inside but safe to drive might go as high as 5K$us. (This is a very open calibration.)
As soon as you get past that, the value is completely situation dependent.
We often say (and proves true) that a reliable and ready to travel coach will cost about 30K$us. What does not get said with this but should is that sweat gets billed in at full shop rate. (Am I out of pocket 30K? - No, but I passed that mark a couple of years back.)

Now, what should you do?
There are market places at GMCMI, the local chapters, and on Fakebook. Then there is Craig's list and you may have a local "Free" rag.
It is also good to set a trap on Ebay.

Over at GMCMI there is also a link to the GMC Assist list. If you make a local contact, he might be of great value. Someplace over there, (start the research now) there is also a "What to look and what to walk away from" write up that might be of value.

When you find something, come back and tell us here or at the old forum. Someone may already know the coach.

I wish you luck.

Matt

Thank you for all that info. I’m located on the eastern shore of Maryland. I used to restore cars for a living . I have always liked this design . I currently have a chinook that I completely redesigned with 4x4 and a queen sleep over cab . We have traveled all over the us and Central America with it. Now that we are mature (old ) I’m intrested in more of a highway machine . That said I’d like to find a solid unit , I have no interest in the interior I’m going to replace it with my own design in structural fiberglass panels . If I can find a driver that would be best Evan if I have to go over the whole thing. I’ve been reading everything I can find on the machine and I am not surprised there is such a following and that there are still some parts out there . I will keep searching . I’m currently in Mexico with my chinook and in the spring will start looking hard for a coach .

Maybe you've notice, but I say this to all new'bs in case you missed it.
When you find a coach, before you do anything, especially before you start/run that motor, read this article that is listed as a LATEST RESOURCE
Listed and titled as:
Starting an engine that has been sitting for an extended period.
At this link.

This could save that engine.
Good luck with finding one and welcome to the group.

I read that article , very good I’ve had the pleasure of staring several barn finds as well as derelict boats and have always used that method or a veriation for diesels . It’s amazing how many people just throw some gas or ether into an engine and let her rip .
