New GMC owner

Hello! I just got my first GMC Motorhome! We (my family of five) have been traveling and camping in a 31' Holiday Rambler Aluma-Lite XL for 3 years
now, turns out we love RV'ing. It was a great RV but the GMC has some advantages that I wanted experience first hand so I sold the HR and started
looking for a GMC. There was one for sale in El Paso, TX that looked good to me for a lot of reasons, so I ended up getting it and driving it back to

doesn't violate any rules about sharing info from a competing website, but they aren't really competing, they are more focused on Winnebagos .

I'm going to have a lot a questions, but my first one is regarding the exhaust. Can I get a stock system from the manifolds back? Mine is totally
gone except the down pipes but I think even they have been cut off at the ends.

Any other options? Do people put bigger pipes or dual exhaust on these?

Where did the stock system hang? After the Y pipe, did it hang underneath the passenger side frame rail? Where would I look for the pipe hanger
attachment points?

Todd,

Welcome to GMC-Land. And the best source of GMC technical support.

If your exhaust system ends as I understand it, at the header pipes, you
must have made a LOT of friends between El Paso and Buffalo -- and arrived
completely deaf.

The OEM exhaust system began with iron exhaust manifolds and continued
through 2-1/4" header pipes, dual mufflers and then into a Y-pipe which fed
a 2-1/2" tailpipe. That pipe went through round holes in the passenger
side of the frame crossmembers, with silicone isolators at those
locations. MANY GMC's have had the tailpipe replaced with 3" tubing (often
sacrificing the silicone isolators).

Probably your best option today is to contact Jim Kanomata (or
Can-o-'Maters)/ Jim K. at Applied GMC in Newark, CA (
jimk) for his complete exhaust systems, including all
stainless steel for maximum durability.

Are there any photos showing the layout of the factory exhaust?

It goes through the holes in the frame crossmembers.... wow, I looked at those holes and wondered about that.

Do people ever put dual exhaust on these using driver's side holes in crossmembers? I'm thinking along the lines of two mufflers, an x-pipe, and dual
exhaust. Or not worth the extra effort?

We didn't go deaf on our trip, the down pipes were attached to two different mufflers apparently re-purposed from a junk yard. Or maybe recovered off
the side of the road. And one may have been a catalytic convertor. I'm not sure the source but they were obviously not original, and not well
attached as we had to do a roadside repair on the drivers side. It tried to fall off on us.

I have owned my GMC motorhome for 38 years now.
Some years back I theorized that if I moved the muffler to the rear it would leave the cockpit cooler and less sound.
I made my own Y pipe at the front which let to the passenger side to a 3” pipe and into the stock holes in the frame to the rear.
I used a single muffler at the rear which had deflectors and reflectors inside it rather than baffles. This was a Flowmaster with an inline 3” inlet and exit. Be sure to use a muffler heat shield over the muffler.
This has worked well for me and it did indeed reduce the heat and sound at the front.

You can build your own or much easier purchase a kit from Applied GMC. They even use stainless steel.

Starting at the engine, you should see what shape the manifolds are in. I struggled with leaks for years, and went with buying headers, since my
manifold faces on the engine were not really good. a year later, and a new engine, I am still using headers. You can decide if you want to go to
headers, or keep manifolds. but make sure you have that taken care of, because the first thing to make noise is the manifolds to the head.

for exhaust You can buy a system from Applied, and maybe the other venders provide a kit? That is one option.

in MN, lots of rust problems and exhaust systems rot off easily, so we have many places that do Exhaust work. I took mine in, and they replaced the
system from the header flange all the way back, for about $450. Many people like to go bigger in pipes, and I went a little bigger. people go
with 3", but my exhaust guy said he tried and could not get the 3" to work in my 75 frame. I know there are some bushings and maybe it was tight,
or maybe some bushings are not a full 3". I think there are different bushings out there. I did not argue, and I am running 2 3/4" pipes.

The reason why exhaust people will tell you it can't be done is because
they do not have the tooling for 3" and know the bends will be kinked.

I put 3" in my 75 Transmode coach in the driveway, the main tube slide right in, the Y required a little welding but there is probably a No Weld way to make it work too.

Jim - I installed your 3 inch system on a 26 ft 1973 coach - note the new owner who started this thread has a 1973 - some of the early coach frames
were less gauge and tend to sag. I had to grind a few of the cross member holes to ensure adequate clearance so the long pipe would "slide right in".

It's a nice system - but like almost any change we make to our coaches we should/can expect some adjustment may be required.

The headers are the cure for bad manifolds, one side of which is made on unobtanium. Look at Applied's exhaust system, or roll your own, if you can
find a shop which can bend 3 inch tubing properly. What's your time worth?
FWIW, two pf my coaches already had Thorley headers when I got them the third had leaking (cracked) stock manifolds and thus was a candidate for a set
of headers. I swapped it before that change was made. If nothing else, the headers are lighter weight and thus easier to get on the engine.

I'll note, my current coach is fitted with a dual inlet single muffler, which precludes the Y pipe but requires some fabrication between the header
flanges and the muffler input. It was there when I got the coach, so far it has worked well but a bit noisy.

You have been here a while and now have a coach of your own.
You and everybody that reads here is welcome, but now you are a real part of the family, cult and asylum.

If you read here often, you may have noticed that I was very late getting to you. That is because our coach broke about a thousand miles from home.
The ONLY reason we were able to recover and get the coach home for the final repairs is the strength of this community. This is a second time for me
on this end and I can't tell you how many I have helped (because I don't actually care). We help each other like this.

You seem to have been reading here a while, and I hope that you have gathered that your coach is more than just a new big toy. It connects you to a
community that is most amazing. Because of the support that the community provides, it will be a help to both you and the community if you were to
fill in a sigfile. To do this, go to and scroll down. You will find it there. Put in your real name (we like to
know who we are helping), a short about the coach including the major mod, and finally a geographic reference so that those that may chose to will
know if they are in striking range. By using this feature of the forum, that sigfile will be attached to everything you post.

I don't know if you read FaceBook, there is a large GMC following there. There are three or five different groups and some of the chapters have
pages. The problem is that some that give advice there are not all that familiar with the TZE and I have seen cases where bad advice was followed. I
chose to say no more here.

Want a real experience?
The fall International Convention will be in Mansfield OH. That is just over 250 miles from Buffalo. Not even a full tank. If you can get there for
any portion of the run, just do it. You will learn more standing in one place and listening to the chatter than you will be able to gather in a year
doing anything else. I am going to repeat (again) what I was told be one of the new owners that I got to GMCMI. "It was like trying to get a sip of
water from a fire hose."
You will get to meet several hundred brand new old friends and at least a few of the vendors that can supply those things that you will need to keep
the old girl alive and well.

If you don't have a maintenance log, start one today. By fall, this will all be a blur. "Did I really buy those batteries 11 years ago?"
Also, on a single page (on a computer) start a five part list:
* Needed now (that are not routine maintenance items)
* Jobs that can be planned for the off season
* Waiting - things you want to do when you have the time and parts
* Abandon - Thing you thought about but now not so sure
* Done - This is the best part. Move things here with a date and this list will keep growing and also serve as a record and reminder along with the
maintenance log.

Do you own a good grease gun? If not, go buy one. This is a whole other discussion, but grease - even the Valvoline Syn-power is still cheaper than
parts.

All this be said, be sure to recognize that you are part of a group of helping and supportive people. The only other community that I know of that is
like this is that of the watermen that are my world. For that very reason, I like to welcome new owners here much as a new owner or vessel is
welcomed there. So,
