If the under panel unit and tach respond properly to the panel light
dimmer in the headlight switch, then it's probably a bad ground. I've
been through several panel light travails. The first was right after I
got my coach - had never driven it at night. First time I tried - no
dash lights. Armed with schematics and test light, I quickly traced it
to bad dimmer. Second time, speedo lights wouldn't illuminate, but
indicators in speedo would. Thinking bad bulbs, I pulled the back off
the dash and pulled the bulb holders - surprise, they test fine. Pulled
on bulb and socket contacts to stretch them a bit and reinstalled.
Voila - they light!

Ain't GMC's wonderful!

Larry,

Also, be sure that nothing besides panel lights have been connected to
the little gray wire behind the dash. For reasons known only to GM, the
lights go to ground when turned off and sometimes installers mistakenly
use it for a ground for other equipment, usually radios.
