A fellow GMC owner who is not GMCnet literate seems to think that a GM 454
Vortex engine should be adaptable to our coaches. Any opinions on this?

No doubt about it! There's several on the road with the GM 454 and its 502
big brother.

Skip,

There's a couple of these conversions out there. IIRC, Dave Greenberg
posted a link to some pictures not long ago. Wouldn't be a real easy
conversion, but can be done. I think Buskirk will quote this work for those
with large budgets.

The only real advantage to this would be a greater assortment of aftermarket
parts and neat stuff, but I'm pretty sure the Olds 455 is stronger(more
torque) on the low end(where we live) than the 454.

Skip; I saved this response from Steve Ferguson to a similar question. Hope
it helps.

Dave, The 454 is a viable option. Buskirks installs them. They have a
modified pan and use an adapter plate between the engine & trans. We used
to do them that way on race cars. Pretty straight forward stuff. I'd still
liike to have a factory pan to copy though. A 502 BB Chevy costs less than
a Mondello short block does to make even more inviting.

(Also) Speedway is just one of the mail order businesses that sells those
adapters. It's really no more than a spacer that goes from the BOP hole
pattern to the Chevy one. You also have to use spacer "feet" or blocks
between the converter & flexplate. All readily available items. The front
motor mount would have to be fabricated also. 455's are not really that
hard to come by. If your block is shot you can always use a 425 Toro or 442
block. They're very high nickle and extremely strong. The 455 crank, rods &
pistons are required for the block swap. The heads are direct bolt-on
items. 500 ft. lbs of torque is not out of the question for these engines.
Just write a bigger check.

Dave:

The coach you refer to in NH belongs to Don Bolles in Mansfield OH. It was done
in early 1996 and briefed at the March 1996 Titusville FL GMCMI Convention as well
as displayed there.

Tom,
I'm looking at a repair manual on the Eldos and Toros and it lists engines
as follows:
Cadillac big V8's 368, 425, and 500 ci

Oldsmobile V-8s 403 and 455 ci

Could always be a misprint.{:>)

It lists the 500ci for Eldos from 1971-76 and the 425ci for 1977 & 78.

The Toros had 455's from 1971-76 and 403's for 1977 & 78.
