New build (maybe)

Hal:

Sounds like a cool project!

Any pics posted yet / how do I follow along?

Thx - Chip

Hal,

How much higher do you reckon the floor will be?
I'm assuming you're using the stock front clip, minus the engine and transmission, so the new frame is from the front clip back, right?

I'm having visions of a lift-the-body & remove-the-front-clip GMC rejuvenation drive-through! 😉

Richard, if even with the floor the differential would hang below the chassis about 3 1/2" which would equate to about 5 1/2-6" ground clearance
depending on ride height. I can easily lower the bogey box another inch if necessary to raise that number and keep rear geometry and handling
characteristics intact. The average auto has about 6" and we usually have a toad which has less than that (Mini Cooper). And yes on the new frame. I'd
love to redo the front with more caster and maybe a rack and pinion but that would open up a whole new can of worms. I wish I'd have gotten into GMC's
earlier but it is what it is.

Hal,

My definition of 'little' differs from yours... by a lot!

Your build would interest probably only 95% of motor-heads, fabricators, makers, etc, and 100% of a guy who wouldn't mind being your agent scheduling
your interviews when you start making the rounds.

Hal,

Since I certainly don't have the 20-30 years left to try to catch up with
your skills, I especially appreciate your letting us follow along! :-)

Thanks guys, it is fun-mostly. That gutting of the Royale hasn't been much fun though. The fabrication stuff, now that is fun. Lots of new stuff to
piece together.

Gutting the coach is a lot more “fun” than rebuilding it imo.

I sure enjoy watching your process. Please keep it up.

Hal,
Nice work.
In your video, you rest the bogie box on a short piece of 2x3 tubing, making it appear as though you are spacing the box outwards from the framerail. I assume this is not the case and that the short 2x3 tube will fit behind the large plate when all is assembled.

I am following this closely. You are creating what I’ve wanted to do for years. Lack of available time, and a CFO with different views has been my limiting factor.

I used the 2x3 tube just as a temp. spacer to show the relationship to the frame. The bogey box will be 2" below the normal location on the frame
though. It helps give the differential some needed extra ground clearance ( a smidgen over 8") as well as the engine/trans. And yes, the plate will be
in front of the 2" drop.
I'm blessed to have a CFO that's very understanding with all my unorthodox building. Things have usually come to fruition in the past and I pray this
one will also.

Hal,

Your new frame is going to have deeper frame rail channels, right? You know how when the coach is at the proper ride height the belt line isn't
level, it's down at the back? I'm trying to picture if the change in frame rails will provide an opportunity to 'level' the body.

I've been tied up with prepping to leave Phoenix, so I'm behind in things. Was I supposed to set up a GoFundHalGMCFab account...? There are a whole
slew of things I'm putting on the list for you to fix! :)

Richard, the frame won't change the ride attitude but adding the 2" under the bogey box will. It should make it close to level I'd guess. Now that
GoFundMe idea sounds interresting...maybe NOT. :d

Having a taller frame rail was an idea I’ve tossed about since I’ve owned a TZE. If I ever have some new rails manufactured, I intend to make them 2“ taller. This allows a bunch of potential. Originally I wanted the extra 2“ of engine to hatch clearance, but the taller rails also permit deeper custom fuel and holding tanks, more room for under tank insulation, and slightly larger tire diameters. What I know I won’t like is the higher body stance. I like the low stance of the stock coaches.

Hal’s RWD mods make me want to try building a custom 23’ coach with all 4 rear wheels driven. It would be a decent camper for mild offroad use. Not too long, not too heavy, soft ride, and decent traction.

Less, I raised the body 2.5" on my first build (6.5 Diesel with 4l80e trans) and added the ground effects fiberglass all around that hides the frame.
It worked fine and I was able to build a 75 gallon single fuel tank with the added height provided. It also let the engine hatch remain virtually
intact. This build should let me use the engine/trans compartment to great advantage for a generator (5kw 2 cylinder Kabota) as well as a fuel tank,
and batteries. There should be room for holding tanks where the gas tanks once resided with an added 1" height and an extra foot of length in front of
the wheels. I shouldn't need to add the ground effects, maybe only adding wheel well flares to hide the height increase. Still a lot in limbo at this
juncture.

All the Buskirk stretch coaches were raised a little over 2”, I have MPFI and everything clears without raising the engine door.
