I just replaced the bench seat in my 73 Painted Desert with a single bucket this
past weekend. The bench is mounted onto a heavy metal box which bolts though the
floor with bolts that are way too small. I traded the bench and the drivers seat
with another GMC owner for their dinette. I installed the new seat using 5/8" x
4" Grade 8 fine thread bolts. Since the surface in our coaches is plywood (ours
is 1", later coaches had 3/4" I believe) I put two pieces of 1/4"x3"x about 20"
steel bar, coated with Por-15 under the floor in place of the aluminum channel
that was there before. Fender washers and locknuts finished the job.

If you have time and know what seats you will use, you might consider doing this
when you pick up the coach. A couple of wrenches, a cordless drill and a 5/8
drill bit with a reduced shank is all that you would need.

Three of
the bolts were easily accessible from the engine compartment. The third was
accessible once I removed the wheel well which is a piece of cake.

The belts attach to the bolts that hold down the seat. I opted for three point
belts. I used some of the same 1/4" bar and cut a slot 10" below the final
mounting point in the two pieces of channel between the front and rear windows. I
drilled a 1/2" hole though the metal and welded the nut that came with the
seatbelts to the back. I then drilled four 5/16" holes in the corners. I drilled
through the channel and fastened the metal piece using 4 5/16"x1" Grade 8 bolts,
lock washers and nuts. In your situation, you could attach the belt to the seat
and leave the shoulder harness for a later date in the comfort of your garage.
The clip near the buckle will hold it fine if needed.

If you have time and know what seats you will use, you might consider doing this
when you pick up the coach. A couple of wrenches, a cordless drill and a 5/8
drill bit with a reduced shank is all that you would need. Once I figured out
where I wanted to put it, if I had the metal bars cut ahead of time, it would
take all of an hour. Two and a half to three hours including cutting (by hand!)
drilling and doing the shoulder harness.

If I have not made myself clear (which is most of the time) let me know. Good
luck with your coach!

Erv,
It looks good. But then anything that looks like my '76 Palm Beach looks good.
I am curious however. I thought that the Palm Beach came out in 1975.
According to GMCMI.COM the models in 1974 were as follows:
1974
Canyon Lands 23' & 26'
Glacier 23' & 26'
Painted Desert 23' & 26'
Sequoia 23' & 26'
Eleganza SE 26'

Are you sure your new coach isn't newer then 1974? Perhaps a 1975 or later?
Regardless you're looking good and welcome to the group.

Congrats Erv... like you, I fell in love with the GMC way back... good luck...
on the seat thing.. don't have anything to offer. Perhaps you could go to a
junkyard and pick one up and just use that to get home..maybe someone in SF area
could help you mount it for the trip home. Let us know if we can help, and take
the black list with you... you never know when you might need it...

My sentiments are WHO CARES! I am not sure mine is a Painted Desert, though Dave
"Hiding in the Podd" Greenberg thinks so. I am customizing it to be mine. Period.
It is a GMC and I am damn proud of it!

(Julie went to bed early tonight, I am feeling a bit frisky. Apologies to all.)

Erv,
Well it doesn't really matter if it's a Palm Beach or not. All that matters is
that it is a GMC and that it has found a new home with you. So good luck and have
fun!
