Talked to Jim Bounds today. He says the old engine is out! Mentioned my
hubs, knuckles and idler arm are shot. Bummer... there goes another $1200.
Can't see putting that pretty Caspro mill in a less than acceptable
front-end. It did steer well after the steering box replacement so I am a
bit surprised.
He did the rear brakes today (with new brake lines) and is pulling my gas
tanks tomorrow to replace the rubber couplers and hopefully fix those leaks.
Trans rebuild and re-cored radiator should be done Monday.
Steam cleaning the gutted engine compartment and insulating it with some
high tech stock car insulation. Doing away w/the after market oil cooler so
the new braided oil lines will bolt right up. All new hoses, belts and lines
(vacuum, gas, etc.) are coming up too along with new fan clutch, torque
converter, rebuilding diff, front brakes and lots of other misc left to do.
Should be like new... nah, better than new if I know Jim when he hits the
road for FC.

How have ya been?

Nate expressed a desire to heat & sound insulate the engine compartment
while we had the motor out, a good idea. I have tried several materials
and there are many you can use for this situation which will work. I will
be using a material that I was turned onto that is ubsed (among other
places) in race cars on the fire wall, floor boards etc.

As it happens, there is a company 3 doors down from mine that actually does
the same thing I do but with corporate & private airplanes. They too use
this material in certain applications. I is a fiber inner core with an
aluminum covering both sides. I do not know the specs. off had but I have
info at the shop. If it is good enough for race cars & airplanes, it
should bee good enough for me! We will be first using hi temp contact
adhesive and then finish screws with fender washers to keep the blankets in
place.

We have degreased the frame & engine compartment Sat. and will be
installing the insulation first thing Mon.

If we can stay on task, I will be driving the coach to Forest City so come
take a look! If I make it by Fri. you must understand that there will have
been alote of overtime put on the coach between now and then. We are doing
brakes, fuel tanks, engine, tranny, front suspension & swap from FI to
carb. We started this past Thurs., lets see if this is where I bite off
more than I can chew!!

Just got a message from Jim on the progress of my coach. He is dressing it
up as it all goes back together with painted A-arms, knuckles, engine
brackets, etc. All new add-ons (ps pump, alt., etc). Dropped the gas tanks
and replaced the hoses and rubber couplers.
He had to do some minor mods on the engine like mechanical fuel pump
(leaving the electric one as a spare/primer) added the water pump, etc.
Sounds like the "ready to run" engine needed a bit of erector set stuff
done. He added the rebuilt trans and cleaned up differential to the engine
(add my old Ragusa pan, etc), super boots on the CV's and sounds like the
engine will go back in tomorrow.
I'll keep you all informed as it get close to the wire.

Don't worry, I'm not charging overtime! No suprises yet, although the hubs
& knuckles were a bit of a setback.

But it will be more than a 6 pack and a bag of ruffles!

Late breaking update, the motor & tranny is in, twas our goal for the day.
The final drive is up first thing and the hookup starts in the morning. We
should start the motor tomorrow and get the front end together and
alignment done Thurs.!

The motor looks good.

Jim really is pretty low priced when it comes to hourly work. He charges
$40/hr and the one that would do the work here in Omaha charges $85/hr. For
the amount they would have charged me here ($10,500 for engine alone) I
could ship it to Jim and do everything under the sun (engine and all
accessories, trans, tanks, front-end, all brakes, etc.).
It made perfect sense to me to ship it to Jim and have him do all the
work. Plus he does this for a living and has a great reputation. The place
locally works mainly on cars. The one time they did do some work for me they
screwed it up and charged me twice what they quoted me. I had to go back
twice so I hated to give them the business. Glad I didn't.
I'm looking forward to getting my coach back and to meeting Jim. I'll have
to get a magic marker and have him sign his name under one of the front
hatches when I see him in FC!

Eugene,

The bearing fit loose in the knuckle and slipped on the hub without
pressure. No heat marks or scoring was present, everything was just loose!
Did not want to go through all of this and reinstall loose parts where we
know they are supposed to be tighter than that.

Just talked to Jim. They are washing it now and will be loading it up for
the trip to FC tonight. He should be rolling up there tomorrow. Mentioned he
would stop in GA and change the oil and filter tonight. Should be a good
breakin trip for the engine and trans...

Welp, Jim should be about 1/2 to Forest City by now. Hope goes well for him
(and my coach)! I'll be going midweek to pickup "The Sweat Lodge". Should be
fun to visit with Jim on the 5 hours back home to Omaha (where he's flying
out of).

Also decided to finally break down and put up my own website. Had the free
space from my ISP so I thought I should quit being so lazy and just do it.
Needed a place to start posting my own pics. Take a peek if you get a sec...

The site looks good. I would suggest that you not use Black lettering
against the dark blue background. It is very difficult to read.

Hmmm... Thanks for the comments but are you sure you were on my site? I
used Frontpage 2000 and used grey background with yellow letters. There is a
link to Ed Hatter's site on the Omaha gathering last weekend. Is that the
part you mean?

Did you miss it??? That's me at the bottom of the "Nate's Toys" page!!!
Autumn is my favorite season. That's why I chose that theme. Been so busy
riding the "Bad Boy" lately that I need to wash it BAD! Those bees are jam
packed full of go juice this time of year. Have to do it tomorrow.
Only good thing about not having my coach is all the miles I have been
racking up.... like today. 63 miles in 80 degree, crystal clear blue sky
with the leaves rustling and everything just beginning to turn. Even
starting to smell like fall, ya know it? About one or two weeks and this
place will be alive with colors. I just love it!

Nate, your initial page comes up on my browser (Navigator 4) with black on
blue. IE is yellow on an artsy background that is mostly grey.

Just gotta message from Tom Winslow at FC. He was nice enough to relay a
message. He said Jim Bounds made it in my coach to FC from Orlando and is
parked in the line next to him. Haven't talked to Jim but there was a
problem with pinging that sounded like I got a car advance instead of the
GMCMH module. Tom reports that that has been corrected. I'm dying to talk to
Jim to see how the ride went. Told Tom to pass along I will be there Weds.
AM bright and early. I'll let you all know more as I do...

Just talked to JB in FC. He said all went well and he did a bit of "road
tuning" during the trip. The ping was bad enough (because of the advance
module) that he timed it by ear. Said that a 1/32" of movement in the
distributor goes from PING city to a dog. I don't care for that tight of
window and I will discuss this with Chuck Stoddard when I arrive on Weds.
Dunno if an anti-knock sensor would do any good here or not??? Should just
put my old distributor back in unless Check has a good reason not to.
Jim said the coach is almost instantaneous from 0-30mph but a typical GMC
coach from there on up. Asked if the 350 gears would solve that and he said
he thought they propably would do the trick. He said to try it myself to see
what I think on Thursday during our trip back to Omaha. Since I don't pull
anything anyways... well, we'll see.
He said he has the mileage on the trip but hasn't figured the MPG yet on
the way up. At least now he said I can filler' up and not see most of it go
on the ground! That will be a relief!
He had a problem with the master cylinder but that was a prob induced by
the IPO swapping out the unit for some aftermarket one. Forgot the name of
the unit he mentioned but he said that those were very problematic at best
and to swap it for a newer unit ASAP. Chuck K. mentioned something similar
once. Guess I had better pay attention here, huh? I'll need those brakes
sooner or later... one of these days (BG)!
Jim said everything else went very well. No other problems to speak of and
that he'd give me a good extended lesson once I arrive and when we drive it
back. I'll bet not many can say they had a full day, one on one on the road,
with Jim in their coach. This should be very enlightening to say the
least...

have "The Sweat Lodge" back home in Omaha from her vacation in Florida. Glad
to report she is happy and healthy and in much better shape now than when
she left! Sure looks nice with the new Caspro engine, rebuilt trans, recored
radiator and all new front end. Jim has everything cleaned up and looking
very spiffy! Even had him sign his John Hancock on his work (at the drivers
floor board bulge by the master cylinder) so you can see it when you open
the right front access hatch.
She has about 2K on the engine now and I'll probably spend tomorrow
changing all the fluids and filters. Now I'll have to get to work!

I don't know what you do for work, but you better be good at it and do a lot of
it to pay the vacation bill for your "Sweat Lodge". Now to write it all off
your tax bill.
