Finally got a call from Jim Kanomata saying that he has his 3.55 and 3.70
gears in! Should be shipping my 3.55 diff on Monday and should be here in
about a week. Hope the weather holds out till I get it and get "The Sweat
Lodge" into the shop to redo the tranny problems and add the differential.
Been 40 degrees for this first week in January in Omaha and that is pretty
much unbelievable!

Question: How much time should a shop charge to do a diff once the tranny is
out? Sounds like this shop was not going to pull it out w/the Tranny. Looks
to me like a dozen or so bolts more and the diff is out. Doesn't look too
bad but then again I haven't had (nor did I really want) the experience of
pulling it myself. Your comments are welcome...

Nate,

The guy should charge you nothing more. Your orig diff. should be on the
groung right now. Go over there and swap it for the new one and I would
not see any reson for the guy to hit you with any charge. Be sure to swap
it out before he puts it back together!

Welp, got "The Sweat Lodge" to the Tranny Dr. today... a whole day ahead
of schedule. Gave them my 3.55 Jim K. diff special and we'll see how it all
shakes out. Talked to Jim Bounds and we are all on the same wave length for
the repairs to "TSL". 50 degrees today, sunny and dry. Fingered it was now
or never... Snow in the forcast tomorrow so it was a leap of faith.
Funny, Jim said that my old engine is going to breathe new life into The
Dumpster! Sounds like it should be a real screamer when it's done from what
he mentioned. I wish Jim and my old mill all the best!

Got my coach back from the tranny guy yesterday. Much improved over when I
took it there. They fixed the tranny problems and added a cooler. Also the
best thing I've done so far is to add the 3.55 differential. This thing
walks right up (even accelerates on) hills now where before I would loose
speed dramatically. This is what I expected when I had all the work done in
Sept last year. Took my uncle for a spin (He drove it) and he was very
impressed. He said his 23' PD would never keep up now especially in the
mountains. I can see where a 3.70 setup would not be too low, Arch.

Jim Bounds has been pretty good about this too. He's going to honor the
local shops labor and repair. I now have a local shop I can take my tranny
problems to. Just wish to hell it wouldn't always happen to yours truly...
taken a lot of time and effort I could have gladly used elsewhere.

Not to say things are perfect in GMC land yet folks, but it's getting better
all the time. I retorqued the headers with the new copper gaskets today.
Took 1/4 turn on almost all of them. I guess that will simply be an ongoing
thing that I add to my growing maint list. It is A LOT better than before
since now I can finally talk to my co-pilot in a normal voice (w/o
screaming)! Next I need to pull the distributor and send it back to Chuck S.
for testing. Got a sneaky hunch they won't find a thing wrong there but it's
worth a shot. 45 degrees today and no snow in the forecast so it will be
hard to justify pulling it till the ground turns white again.

Also I need to get the exhaust fixed and would like to goto 3" aluminized
but doubt I'll find anyone here to tackle it. 2 1/2" is what the usual place
want to install. Even that w/one DynoMax muffler added at the rear it would
probably be a whole bunch better than stock. Have a broken muffler behind
the passenger header and it really rattles. Kind of unnerving at times since
it sounds like the engines falling out. Thank God it's not... just sounds
like it at times!

I looked at Heinz's LED dash stuff on his site and went to Dakota and
Intellitronix web sites. Summit has a nice 6 gauge setup for $279
(ITC-TH10002) which includes all the sensors. Thought this would be a good
alternative to the stockers or adding on the LCD ones above the radio.
Dakota has some nice ones but for twice the price I think I'll try
Intellitronix. Wish someone has tried these. They don't even give dimensions
or specs in the Summit catalog and the Intellitronix web site doesn't even
show this setup. I'd really like to get them in Amber instead of green or
red. I sent an email after I got stuck in their phone mail jail so we'll see
what shakes out there...

Just thinking of what Jim P. (IIRC) wrote... something to the fact it's
gonna cost you $50K before it's done (sooner or later). I now have over $30K
in "The Sweat Lodge" and I guess I'm better than half way there, Jim! Man,
this stuff mounts up quick if you want to do it right...

Yo Nate, now that you've passed the$30k mark, don't you think it's about
time you changed "The Sweat Lodge" to "The Sweet Lodge"?

Dave,
HA! I wish the sweatin' part was over, guy! Heck I haven't even really
begun to attach the insides yet. I wanted to 100% sure that mechanically I
would be safe and not be stranded again. Hard to build a good house if the
foundation is bad.
Now I feel I have a fairly good foundation, thanks to Jim Bounds for
standing behind his work. Still not to the level I'd really like (if I was
well off) but I'm much closer than 10 months ago when I bought her. Feel
pretty confident I can jump on and ride her to what ever coast I feel like
now w/o any major problems.
I think "TSL" rather than "TLC" is a fairly accurate moniker for what
she's done and continues to do to me and my billfold... Once I get to the
$50K mark then I'll reconsider... Hell, by then I'll probably just wind up
calling her "The Bank" since I'll have more in her than Chase Manhattan!

Or "The $weat Lodge"

Man Nelson, ain't THAT the truth!!!

Hope that life is treating you well, guy! Can't wait to here the latest on
your trips (with and w/o Jimmy) after Forest City. Hope to chat with you
soon...

Hi Nate,
Have you ever heard the comparison between putting your money
in a GMC motorhome or putting it in a hole in the ground????

The hole eventually fills up.
