MY SERPENTINE BELT PROJECT

Take a look at my latest effort to make an affordable serpentine belt
system for the accessories on the front of the 455 motor. It will drive
the CORRECT ROTATION WATER PUMP, alternator, power steering pump with an
added idler pulley AND NO NEW BRACKETS! I show a Gates 6 Rib belt that is
57.5" inches in length. The Air conditioner compressor will remain as a
V-belt.

I have two completed systems ready to ship to Billy Massey (BDUB) and Rick
Shoop. They must buy the alternator pulley, power steering pulley, Idler
pulley and the Serpentine belt for the Install, less than $75.
I will have two more sets ready in Sept and I'll post the Charges for the
Water pump and Crank shaft pulley then.

Looks good. Is that sufficient wrap on the steering pump? I've no idea the efficacy of the serpentine belts.

I'm curious as well, seems very low on contact area there.
Like johnny I have no clue how much is "enough" just curious if it's been tested, I'm guessing not since it's no installed in the coach yet?

Lookin' good! 1 Q: Is that idler a tensioner also (looks small)? Or is
it only a tensioner, meaning, I suppose, that you adjust tension with the
alternator -- as I do on the Cad500.

Looks like a straightforward simple design. By removing the A6 loading the alternator bearings should be happier.

Well, I screwed that up! I MEANT to say it looks like an IDLER only, NOT a
tensioner.

The tensioner is on the wrong side of the crankshaft pulley.

And here is why:
The crankshaft pulley pulls down on the belt and therefore the belt between the crank pulley and the power steering pulley is under tension and the
belt between the power steering and the alternator pulley is under tension and the belt between the alt pulley and the water pump is under tension.

Now the section of belt between the crank pulley and the water pump pulley is not under tension, it is actually under compression and therefore the
slack in the belt while running is created here. The tensioner pulley should be on this side of the crankshaft pulley.

Since there isn't room for the tensioner between the crank and waterpump pulley you should add an idler pulley left of the waterpump pulley far enough
out to add the tensioner pulleybetween the crank and new idler pulleys.

Rick is correct about the location of the idler/tensioner. Tensioners should always be on the slack side of whatever belt or chain they are keeping
tight. Idlers can be anywhere, but the slack side (or the long run) is where control is necessary. I put an idler in the area between the water pump
and the alternator on the Olds 350 diesel engine because the crank pulsations were flapping the belt to death even though it was tight enough to dish
the back of the V-belt. Might get a pic of it tomorrow and see what parts I used.

I think an idler where he's got it to give more wrap on the power steering is necessary, and if there are no pulsations in the top run during
operation and no slip on the pump, he is good to go. I might prefer it between the pump and the alternator but that would require more bracketry, and
Tom said NO NEW BRACKETS!!
The water pump will get drive from the A/C belt when it's on there and is getting the same wrap as the stock V-belt but actually has 6 small Vs in it
now and should not be a problem until at least 3500 rpm or so.

In looking at the photos, I would think it's an idler for more PS belt wrap and the belt tension
is done by the alternator adjustment.

How I would do it.

That's what I figure too. I can't imagine Tom putting a tensioner on the
load side.

THANKS FOR THE INPUT.

The only added pulley to this system is an Idler pulley. An idler pulley
is not a tensioner pulley. An idler pulley *function is to add guidance*
and is used in this case to get more "capstan wrap" on the Power steering
pulley.
In all my communications with March, Vintage Air and Billet folks, the
major concern was not enough contact on the Power Steering pulley. This
is the image of what explains the area of contact after consulting with

requirements of the IDLER position from these sources.

I would be interested, provided your road tests show that the "capstain wrap" for the power steering pump is sufficient.

What is the advantage and can you do the project without pulling the engine?

The advantage of a serpentine belt system is simplicity and ease of
replacement of the belt. It is also easier on parts too, as it's not
"pulling" on the pulleys of the parts as much.
