My "Buzz Box" is buzzing, no power reaching the house battery

Changed out the bridge rectifier on the Onan and voila.... she puts out power again!! Bought a big one, shouldn't have any more issues with that.

Runs great, doesn't smoke or make any funny noises.

I'm going to order a set of head gaskets and de-carbon the heads since I have no idea if it's ever been done.

Be careful to turn off all loads on the generator, BEFORE TURNING OFF THE
GENERATOR. Particularly the roof air.

I certainly did remember to do that, and will hopefully continue to do so.

Matt mentioned that he thought that's what caused his rectifier to crap out.

I've got 2 more.... just in case.

Would you agree that it should be done if it never has been done?

I'm sure for a portion of it's 47 years, it was ran on leaded fuel.

Head gaskets are cheap, and they are simple to replace.

I have a collection of 30 something vintage John Deere garden tractors. One of the first things I do after I acquire a new one and get it running is
pull the head for a cleaning. It has the added benefit of being able to judge engine wear based on the condition of the cylinder walls.

It's not that I'm reading 45 year old instructions, it's just a good idea to do it if you don't know when or if it has ever been done.

Jared,

Go on and pull the heads, knock off the big flakes.

NOW, if the head gaskets are asbestos filled copper, Leave them ALONE. Do your best to not hurt them while you clean the piston crown. If you bought
new gaskets, you will note that they are not the MFM (metal-filler-metal) that are there. The reason is that those gaskets were expensive to make.
They are very good with the limber cylinder head castings like old F-head engines all have. If they are undamaged, when you screw the heads back
down, they will work as well (and maybe better with the re-torque) than they did before. You do have to be sure that they stay on the same side and
go back where they came from.

After I de-carbonizing mine the Onan ran a lot smoother. If is amazing how much build up inside after 200 hours of run time. I have done mine twice
in the last 10 or 15 years.

I de-carboned The heads on the 6k in The War Pig and re used the gaskets.
Worked fine. Someone I think on here suggested to put a layer of anti seize
on the exposed side of the gasket prior to installation which I did. There
was a lot of carbon on the heads/ pistons.

The trick that I was taught was to spray both sides of the gasket with aluminum paint several times and then reuse.

J.R.

Real aluminum paint will work well, if you let it dry completely.
So will good anti-sieze, or a dry moly-cote.
The fact is, is any gasket has not been damaged, it can be reused and will work at least as well as it ever did.
