Attended very interesting seminar by Joe Mondello at the Olds National
Show in Dallas. This was my first time to meet him and hear him talk.
Joe worked in R&D for Olds for a while and appears to be mostly
involved with engine heads, primarily high performance. He has written
(donated) 2 articles to the national Olds club newsletters, on gasoline
and engine cooling. He has very extensive machine shop equipment and
testing facilities, is into racing, and owns 5 Oldsmobiles. Some
interesting engine things he touched on are summarized below.

RINGS AND GAPS. He suggests ring a gap of 20-28 mils and aligns the
rings relative to the wrist pin in a certain sequence to minimize oil
burning. Details in his book.

HEAD GASKETS. He uses Felpro and controls the RA (roughness) of the
machining. Said that many machine shops do not control the RA.

OIL PRESSURE. Don't worry about oil pressure as long as it increases
with rpm. If it is low at idle, the engine is not doing much then
anyway.

OIL PUMPS. He sells a high volume oil pump that uses a 3/4 inch inlet.

OIL RESTRICTORS. Oil restricters are required with high volume pumps.
After the meeting I chatted with Joe for a while about restrictors. He
suggests using them with standard pump on the 455 as well. They have
run tests with a plastic window in the oil pan and the pan can run dry
at about 4200 rpm with stock pump. He suggest using 3 (I think)
restrictors with the stock pump and more with the high volume pump.
They go in the cam bearing oil holes.

HEAD BOLTS. New head bolts need to be torqued 3-4 times (torque/loosen
1 at a time) to get the proper clamping pressure. Old bolts torque
only once.

ELECTRIC WATER PUMP. He is coming out with an electric water pump that
is good for at least 2500 hours, takes about 7 amps. Use with 2
electric radiator fans.

CRYO. Joe freezes all motorhome engines that are rebuilt. Says this
increases the strength and lubricity which reduces mating surface load
friction by 50%,

He referred several times to motorhome engines and some motorhome guy
that has 370,000 miles on the 455 engine. (Dave) He is also buying
all the new Eldebrock intakes that have been built. I believe he
reworks them to improve the flow even more.

About 350 classic and vintage Oldsmobiles at the show including an '03
single cylinder model that looked brand new.
