Waldo:

With our type of front suspension, there is a limit as to the amount of
weight it will tolerate. I believe the longtime consensus is that it is
already at its limit. Therefore, more than likely the type engines that
interest you are not feasible in the GMC.

Allegedly, years ago somebody tried to adapt a diesel engine to the GMC
without success because of its weight.

As far as a throttle body system is concerned, although I don't have
one, I know others that do and here both pro and con. I do have a
concern about their long term use as I'm aware of a couple coach owners
who have experienced burned pistons, allegedly from lean mixtures.

Subject: GMC: Modern Diesel Engine for GMC MH

Hello All,

I'm the new owner of a 1976 Palm Beach. Also new to this list.
A friend and I have discussed installing a new GMC Turbo Diesel or an
International Turbo Diesel (7.3). Has anyone tried this? I only found
references to the old Olds V-8 Diesel in the archives.
Also, would like comments on installing a Throttle Body Injector system
on the existing 455.

Waldo: I installed a throttle body injection system. Although I have only
have a months on mine, I think it is worthy of consideration. After all
our carbs were designed in the late 60's and early 70's and the TBI is a
late 80's, so we have moved up a number of years in technology.

Mr. C.,

Appreciate the comment.

Paul,

It would be interesting to actually weigh the two engines. My guess is that a
diesel would not weigh more than 100 lbs more than the existing 455. Surely
the suspension is not that close to being overloaded!!

Any one else with experiences of "burning pistons"?

In any event, thanks for the inputs.

Congrats on your new GMC Classic!

I know of one diesel installation on a coach in the Registry. It is in
Mahopac, NY and it is a 6.2l engine. That is all I know about it but
eMail me directly and I'll give you contact info.

Justin,

You hit the nail on the head!! I had hoped someone had an answer. There is
always the prospect of making an adapter plate. Food for thought.
