Middle age spread

I've seen a few GMCs that appear to have the "middle age spread." On one,
the top of the door was flush with the motor home when closed, but the
bottom was not (possibly just a bent door). On another, the aluminum was
"puckered" at the seam on the drivers side behind the galley window,
creating a small gap. I've looked over Emery's fix at
http://www.gmcmotorhome.info/spread.html, but was wondering if anyone has
tried pulling the sides in using cables and a turnbuckle. Any other fixes
out there?

And is middle age spread really anything to worry about?

I never posted pictures of it but I also fixed the spread at the
driver's side by removing the stove and mounted a right angle bracket
to the closet wall under the countertop and drilling a hole in it and
another hole in the beltline frame. I then used a length of 3/8"
threaded rod with a nut behind the hole in the side frame. I then
tightened the nut at my right angle bracket until the gap behind the
countertop was closed. I put another nut onto the threaded rod to keep
the rod from loosening.

This same thing could be done by the door for models that don't have
the refrigerator cabinet next to the door

this is a version of the cable idea, folks have put a cable out the kitchen
window and pulled it together.

Bryan,

Before you do all that middle-age spread (MAS)work, drive the coach up no ramps high enough to go underneath and take a good look at the frame for any bow from front to back. Pull a string to see what the bow, if any, may be.

My door had a good gap at the top, and at first it looked like symptoms of MAS. After I replaced the frame rails (they where wasted at the bogie area), the door closes flush with the body, no MAS. The weak frame was no longer supporting the body straight, causing the body load to be greater in the middle. The front and rear of the body was pulling the roof down in the middle and spreading the wall at that area. MAS.

Just something for you to think about.
