Michigan to Reno trip

An interesting story about Winnemucca, NV 45 years ago when it was just a wide spot in the road. I was headed westbound and stopped for fuel late in
the evening. I asked where I could stop and put up my tent for the night. They sent be to a city campground that was nothing more that a patch of
grass a couple of blocks south. No one was there so I got out my sleeping bag and went to sleep for the night. When I woke up the next morning in
the daylight, I discovered that I was parked and sleeping on a city baseball diamond. The camp ground was another block south.

Sandra,
Too much traffic and not enough lanes and many large trucks that and will
take the lane that your in and push you out of the way. I haven't been
there since 2014 as I have been using a much higher route as I stated.
Avoid during typical rush hour times or real early in the morning. Our
first trip thru the area with 4 coaches was a real treat. I am told that
there is bypass, but I have not seen it. Maybe Hal Kalding will post as he
runs that area a lot.

I am considering going way south: Michigan to Albuquerque to Las Vegas to Reno area. My mapping program shows only ~350 mile difference in that route
vs. direct. I am willing to spend an extra long day to do that if we can possibly avoid significant weather. So now we have at least 3 different
routes to take. Of course we will have to make a last minute determination when we leave and play it by ear as we go. Fortunate that we will have 10
days to get there if I can get my act together and we leave on time.

So far I have learned a lot during this thread about websites I never knew about, routes to take and weather this time of year. Thanks for all the
input from everyone.

Should be fun if I can keep the old girl running.

Thanks, John. Maybe we can find a GE bypass.

.....Thanks, John. Maybe we can find a GE bypass ......

There are two ways to bypass.

Going West on i10 or 180, take the 375, Joe Battle exit North. Big wide great drive, rejoins i10 North of downtown.
It does climb over Franklin Mtn. pretty steep but a beautiful drive.
Should be no problem for your big SOB.

Another choice starts same but then before Franklin mtn turn right, North on US 54, Gateway Blvd. Then 1st exit is KenWorthy,
turn left under freeway to continue due North on FM3255 into New Mexico. Where it becomes 213 for 2 miles and you turn
left, West on 404 for about 8 miles before it also rejoins i10 just into NM, 25 miles to Las Cruces, 275 to Tucson.

Years since I did either of these. And then it was all way out from town and no gas. Should have grown up by now.
Plenty of stations in Las Cruces. And campground in Deming. Used to be several GMC owners South of Deming toward Mexico.

Richard, If you do take that route the weather will be perfect on I-80 or I-70/US50 and it will heavy rain or snow in ABQ. I would plan and take the
route that wanted and make changes if the weather forecast or conditions dictates it.

Have a great trip.
