The Sept. 1998 Hot Rod Magazine had a couple of interesting articles. They
built two familiar street engines and published the dyno results. The first
was an Olds 455 and the second was a Cad 500. They didn't give a cost for the
Olds but, since it involved a new set of Edelbrock aluminum heads, it probably
wasn't too cheap. They claimed a total cost of about $4000 for the Cad.

Output results:

Olds 449 hp @ 5000 rpm
542 lb-ft of torque @ 4000 rpm
9.5:1 compression ratio

Cad 514hp @ 4400 rpm
575 lb-ft of torque @ 2600 rpm
10:1 compression ratio

If some of you engineers would crunch the GMC numbers (weight, frontal area,
tire diameter, axle ratio, 4800 max rpm for the Cad, 5500 max rpm for the Olds,
etc.), one of these engines might break the record on the cheap. According to
a previous post, the number is only about 99 mph.
