Manufacturer's Plate" for export

Hi folks. As has been mentioned, I have found a new home for my coach, and the customs documentation (going to the US from Canada) asks for a
manufacturer's plate, usually located inside the driver's door :lol: Of course, the only thing that I can find is the VIN plate under the passenger
side lid. Specifically they will be looking for month and year of manufacture on that plate.

Now I know we can decipher that information from the VIN. Is there some other location on the coach that it might also be? If you say "sticker
inside/behind the glove box" then that is a no go, since any sticker that used to be there is long gone. Would it be acceptable (do you think) to use
the VIN and a copy of interpreting the GMC VIN?

I always thought the VIN plate under the passenger side door was “IT”.

Could be wrong, though……

OK Deb,

You are going to have to find a knowledgable customs agent that has experience with antique and classisc vehicles. Most will be looking for the
modern 17 character vin that became standard in 1981. Before that, VINS were totally the province of the manufactures attitude. Some, like the old
VW bugs, there were not even model year, just a serial number that only later included a model year and a body code.

My suggestion:
Work with the plate under the right hood. You should have matching numbers both the build sheet in the glove compartment and at the driver's left
elbow. All I can say here, is Good Luck.

There's that.....and isn't there a serial # stamped on to the frame somewhere? Maybe a picture of that in addition to the plate under the hood? JWIT

Hi Matt. I think that’s what we will have to go with. There is no build sheet in the glove box, and no sticker by the driver’s elbow either. I
suspect that in a complete GMC build, that sticker isn’t there. That may be for secondary builds (norris?)

I did send the buyer a copy of the page deciphering the GMC VIN, showing that this would have been a US manufacturer, in 1977 and based on the
production #s that year, should be a July coach.
I think his broker should be fine with it.

If I were going to look for a serial # on the frame, where would that be hiding?

My 1977 Kingsley has a manufacturers plate to the left of the door opening just below the belt line. Actually 3 plates. One is a manufacturer compliance plate certifying the electrical, plumbing and heating to ANSI standards. The next one is a GMC builders plate with the serial #, plan approval # and manufacturers date. The bottom plate is faded and illegible. I took a picture I can send by email if your interested. I also have the usual plate on the passenger side under the hood and the glove box build sheet.

Thanks Neil. I have 2 plates at the door as well. The compliance RVIA plate (oval) and the vary faded blue plate below that which shows Testing Review
Assurance. But no builders plate. And no sign that there may have ever been one there. Hmmmm. I wonder where else it could be mounted. I’ll
keep searching. Thanks for the offer of the pics. I think I’m OK. If I do find it, I think I’ll know it when I see it.

It's been a while but IIRC the GMC serial # on the frame is located on the
drivers side frame rail aproximatly
in the middle of the living room window area, on the outside I think.

Hi Larry. Checked that link (thanks) and in the next picture is the plate that Neil was referring to. These are pics from Bill Bryant and description
of that plate says “only 10%” of GMCs had the plate. So I guess we work with the VIN plate.
Thank you all. I think I’ll leave it at that. I could spend days looking for a sticker or plate that was either never there, or has been long
removed.

Our European 23' has the VIN stamped on the frame driver side, about half way between front axle and middle tire.

There are a number of "identification" tags, plates, stickers on a GMC MH, each has a specific purpose. Many of the suggestions here pretty much
confuse the issue you need to address. The embossed VIN/TZE tag behind the pass access door is the "official" ID of a GMC MH. The glove box sticker
supports this and provides additional detail as to options, dates model, etc. The frame stamping is on the driver side under the "sink window" on a
26', stamped up side down about 2" from the top of the frame (a picture is someplace in my wbryant photos).

Thanks Bill. I appreciated finding that little series of ID photos you have posted. Helped quite a bit. And thanks to Larry for getting me the
first link that got me there!
I think from what I can see, the only thing (related to the import documentation needed) that the manufacturer's plate and/or the build sheet could
give me that the VIN doesn't is the specific month (and maybe year) of manufacture. The VIN gives me model year but not necessarily actual
manufacture year(?) and the production number of that model year. Am I correct? But if the only piece of consistent ID that would give me that
actual manufacture date is a paper label in a glove box, I don't think they can get too bent out of shape that it might be long gone after 45 years.

I think if they're that keen to crawl around looking for the frame serial # and VIN stamp, more power to them. My eyes aren't that good close up -
got cross-eyed checking for the frame #s.

Well I guess it's time to head out and get the last few things taken care of in the coach, then she is off to her new home next week. Sad to see her
go, but she will be well-taken care of and get lots of touring! She has many miles left in her and I'm glad she will get to use them.

When I imported my 1975 Palm Beach from Rochester NY to Niagara Falls Canada almost 5 years ago, I was stressed about various documentation. I just
followed the USA rules re: paperwork and numbers. Made sure everything was properly completed with no omissions. When I arrived at USA customs at the
allotted time, it took all of 5 minutes He reviewed the paperwork peeked out the office window and stamped the documents to present to Canada Customs.
I was told and expected that they would physically inspect the coach VIN etc. Didn't happen.

When I got to the Canadian side they just wanted the taxes and took a 1-2 minute peek inside out of interest of the coach itself. No VIN checks etc.
They just accepted the paperwork.
I was amazed how easy it was....It is probably the same going the other way CA to USA. Just make sure they have all the paper work filled in with no
gaps. Also the allotted time must be set up in advance at US Customs or it won't go very smoothly.

Temporary plates and proof of insurance are a must in either direction. Good Luck

He is using a broker and it will be transported all the way by commercial carrier. So I don't think there will be any problems with temporary plates
or insurance. Just making sure we have all of the numbers that we can get. And since VIN is all we have, and the "Deciphering" page, that should be
enough. I had no problems coming in from the US with her. Also used a broker to make sure all of the paperwork was in order. US guy just confirmed
the VIN, looked around the outside, and same at Canada Customs.
I don't think there should be much of a problem going the other way either. Buyer is working with the broker right now and I think he's good to go.

Never easy coming into the US from CA
I once had to remover everything from a packed VW bug coming to the US.
Going into Canada just limited on beer and guns.

1977 Kingsley 455 as stock as it gets except lots of Ragusa parts
 
I had similar issues importing an engine trans and final drive from Ontario to US. They treated it as if it was an entire coach. I checked ahead of
time with US customs and they told me everything I needed. I stopped going in at US customs and a nice Lady customs agent said we will treat this as
an informal importation. She took the paperwork and wrote across it "if there is any problems contact me" and wrote her badge number and contact
information."

Two days later when I pulled up at the Customs border check, I handed the documentation to them and about 15 seconds later they said "you are good to
go". They never as much as asked for a passport or ID because I arranged the stuff ahead of time. They treated all three items as one unit and never
even looked in the truck.
