making an APC

I ordered an APC and went to install it, only to realize that there was one in place! So I installed the new shiny one, and the old one is available.
It's a simple solid state device, so the fact that this unit has a few years of service on it should make no difference. Send me your email and
mailing info via private message and i'll mail this one out to you gratis.

That is one item, I am not sure it is worth your time to build. A $20 check to Eugene, and you will probably have one by the end of the week. Yeah,
parts are probably a few bucks, but you will spend some gas driving to get them.

But if you are set on DIY, then here is the info you probably need:

Jim Bounds also has a circuit diagram for a fix as well out there. I see it is in his member pages, and I am not going to hunt down my password
right now, but I would guess a call or email to him and he will share the info.

Heck, I was looking forward to someone giving him instructions for an
armored personnel carrier. (Grin)

It used to be available without having to join the CoOp. I don't know how to get to it now without joining:

Adam,

Here's Gene Fisher's diagram of his APC:

For the diode, I'd use one rated at least 200 PIV and 6A.

You've gotten suggestions to use Jim Bounds' circuit. If you do that,
you'll need to connect it upstream of the NIchrome wire. And if you use
the 100 Ohm resistor he recommends, you may have to rev up your engine
every time you start it to provide sufficient initial excitation to the
alternator. The correct value, as specified on the wiring diagrams for the
Nichrome wire, is 10 Ohms. That should be at least a 20 Watt resistor.

Ken H.
