Hey guys (and gals),
I've been thinking about some of the relatively heated discussions that
have happened on the GMC list. When it comes to technical subjects it seems
like we can agree to disagree without it becoming too terribly personal.
This is one of the GMC Net's great strengths and a fundamental reason why
we continue to give and receive thoughtful, mostly right, technical
information.
Patrick has done a GREAT job of policing the non-GMC content, and for that
we all owe him a great deal. In large part, we owe this great forum to
Patrick's foresight and occasional policing of what we all write here.
From time-to-time folks do butt heads over other "facts" with a
misunderstanding of the others' position - it's easy to do online. That's
fine, but do yourselves a favor: before blasting your reply out to the
entire list consider sending a private message first. If you feel that
you're unfairly being attacked, you can also respond privately first. It
doesn't really slow down the exchange on the list and it gives both of you
the opportunity to fully understand each others point of view. If you still
disagree and feel it's valuable to the list, go ahead and post.
I can count the number of vigorous technical disagreements that we've had
in the last two years on two hands. That's an incredibly low number for the
number of subscribers to the list. By way of comparison, I also subscribe
to a technical diving list. There are several opinion-based arguments per
week with fewer subscribers. These types of verbal brawls cause some people
to unsubscribe, and others to remain silent for fear of being ridiculed.
Patrick has contributed greatly to the low number of arguments online by
insisting that we stay off certain topics. We all can continue to help make
the list the place we want to be by remaining courteous and considering
whether or not we want whatever we're about to send enshrined permanently
in the GMC archives for all to read for years to come.
