Lug nuts

Been wanting to check torque on lug nuts for some time but haven't
had big enough torque wrench to do it until today. Thing is I'm
checking to see what correct torque is and come up with range from 140
to 250. I read somewhere just recently that you would stretch the studs
at 250 ft lbs and I see a posting on gmc net that says lug nuts are to
be torqued to 250 ft lbs. Did I miss something somewhere? I've always
tightened them by feel with 1" drive ratchet and have no idea what
torque I was putting on them.

the original factory manuaol says the correct torque for the wheel studs for
original steel wheels is 250ft lbs.

For the axel nut the original factory manual says 200 ft lbs. However the
June 1996 issue of GMC Motorhome news in an article by Wes Caughlan says it
should be 140 ft lbs and insert the cotter key. If the key cannot be
inserted increase the torque until it can be inserted but not to exceed 280
ft lbs.I would go with this.

Axel nut is the large nut with the cotter key.

Lug nuts are not wheel studs!! Lug nuts screw onto the wheel studs to hold
the wheel in place.

The 140 ft/lb is for the Alcoa wheels, I do mine at 150# which is the
middle of the range of 140# to 160 # that was on the box that the wheels
came in. The steel wheels have a much higher range and if you are in
the 220 to 230 range you are probably ok. When I changed to Alcoa
wheels I had to heat the lugs nuts with a torch and use a 3/4" air
impact wrench to remove them. Fortunately when I check the studs for
stretch they were in good shape.

You torque the AXEL nut (with the cotter key) to as much as 250'#??? I
haven't looked at my Owner Manual, but that sounds like a recipe for cooked
bearings to me.

Paul why add to the confusion? Page 10-2 of the maintenance manual figure 2
notes "wheel stud tightening sequence. I know the difference and you know
the difference. We are trying to help someone differenciate between lug
nuts and axel nuts.
