loose threaded inserts for overhead cabinets

Does anyone have a solution for loose threaded inserts for the overhead
cabinets?

They tend to spin when I'm trying to loosen or tighten the cabinet
securing bolts at the wall.
I finally got the cabinets down, then back up, but I don't really want to
drop them again.

Ron:

Those are aluminum nut-serts, and will need to be drilled out and replaced.

If you choose the Harbor Freight tool (it’s not bad), throw away the threaded insert that comes with the kit, and get real ones made of steel.

You might want to step up to the “Astro” tool. It will save you time.

Buying the inserts is one of those times when the name brand does make a difference.

Take care in drilling out the existing aluminum inserts. You don’t want to expand the hole by spinning it.

If you get one stuck in the coachwork and can’t get it out, just seal it in place with a dollop (always wanted to use that word, there is it) of RV Goop or equavalent.

FWIW, you’ll use the tool again when you get a round to doing the front cap above the flight deck, although with a different size fastener.

An easy solution is to remove the loose expanded nut and purchase a u but. I believe your bolts are 1/4" - 20.

Slide the u nut over the aluminum flange with it centered over the hole. Your bolt will then thread up into the u nut.
You can find them on Amazon or at your local hardware or auto parts store.

I am afraid that you are out of luck there.

But, I believe that those are Nutzerts in there, and if the is the case, you can do what I have now done a time or two (twenty).
Get a Gr.* HHCS (bolt) for the thread and run a greased Gr.8 nut on it with an SAE washer Or a size smaller USS washer. Finger thread it into the
nutzert at least 1-1/2 diameters. Hold the head and tighten the nut and you should be able to recrush the nutzert and make it lock.

A simple fix is to use Unuts which you can get in Amazon, your local hardware or auto parts store. I believe the 1/4" x 20 is what you need. They slip right over the aluminum flange and you cupboard bolt will fit right in.

I'll keep the suggestions for the next time I have the cabinets down. I
hope I can get the bolts back out then.
