Loading on the GMC wheels

I agree with the philosophy of using the largest tires that will fit a
particular vehicle. (as you said)

What do you or others consider the largest tire in the 16 inch
category?
Since this is a function of suspension clearance, note, I am one who
considers driving with the suspension down a bad thing to do in any
case, no matter what the tire size, and carry emergency threaded rods
for just this contingency.

In an effort to shorten this thread (it's not my fault... or
Patrick's) I didn't post till everyone got tired, and then my subject
wasn't covered. I found the answers I was looking for, on Billy
Massey's FAQ... maybe others have the info posted too? If you do have
tire sizes posted, a pointer here might help others, since it is one
of those questions!
