More than likely.. what they meant to say was the tongue weight max was 1000lbs...(which is a lot!)?
The total weight you can tow is whatever you think you can stop with..(That will be the limiting factor..)??
You can always get started, but stopping??...DEPENDS..
(You may need to use them).

The towing capacity of the GMC motorhome is 1000# period. 1000 tongue
weight and you would never get started.

Its not a matter of additional brakes on the toad. Ever have to do an
evasive maneuver with your car where you swerve violently to miss someone?
Now try it with the GMC motorhome and see what enormous stresses this puts
on the frame and coach, when you are pulling a 4000# car.Not me.

OK arch if you do it you will die....................... maybe.

A few years ago my wife and I were visiting Germany and driving on a 6 lane
divided autobahn near Stuttgart. We were travelling about 85-90 miles and
hour and in back of a BMW hauling a trailer with another BMW on it. He
pulled out to pass a car and started to fishtail. Within seconds the
fishtail turned into a full fledged spin with both car and trailer going in
giant circles in front of me. Believe it or not he came to a complete stop
in the middle of the autobahn without any apparent damage, except for lots
of brown spots on his shorts. Poor guy was shaking like a leaf. His frame
was severely bent.

Point is the GMC can haul lots of weight. It will have a hard time in an
evasive maneuver pulling lots of weight. That was my point. I would keep
the weight down to under 2400 #

Tom,
How did you arrive at the 2400# weight limit?

I'm curious as I still am thinking about buying something
to tow. I had a Jeep Cherokee in mind, we bought it, but
somehow my son ended up taking it to college.

I hope you're feeling better. My brother in law had a kidney
stone last year and said it was the most painful thing that ever
happened to him.

Just guessed. I have almost decided on a saturn if I tow anything and that
is in the ball park. Point is to keep the town weight low.

I think Tom has 'upgraded' to Darvocet with a Cranberry Stoli chaser for his
'stones.
I imagine he's feeling a *lot* better.

Probably not a bad guess. I towed an 89 Olds Delta 88 on a dolly with
brakes close to 3,000 miles on trip a few years back. The "downsized" sedan
must be close to 4,000 lbs. Braking was not a problem but, while I never
felt out-of-control, occasionally the dolly/car assembly would fishtail -
exacerbated by the "monkeymotion" inherent to tow dollies. I would NEVER
tow on a dolly again. Based on the "feel" of that 4,000 lb Olds pushing the
GMC's rear end around and the many positive reports from GMCers towing
Saturns, 2400 lbs is a good conservative number.

My current plans are to tow a Cherokee dinghy style. At 3,000 lbs I imagine
the Cherokee is probably near the upper limit of my comfort zone. If it
doesn't feel safe, I'll have no qualms about changing to a Saturn.

> Hi all,

Being a relatively "new" GMC owner, I didn't know what if anything to tow. The PO
of my coach towed a Buick LeSabre on a dolly with a surge brake. They went from PA
to FL each year for the winter. I don't think they towed to club rallys. When I
bought the coach, I also bought the dolly. Now we've attended two GMC conventions
and six club rally and I've observed that the Saturn and the Suzuki/Tracker are
the toad of choice. I bought an '82 VW Rabbit convertible to tow on the dolly. Our
2400 mile trip to Forest City went without a hitch. I don't know about weights,
but I know towing a Rabbit on a dolly w/surge brake is a good way to go.Skip in
