There hasn't been much said about the land speed record since the flurry of
posts around the first of the year.

Is anyone planning to run their GMC at the salt flats this August? If so do you
know which day(s) you would be running?

Sounds crazy, I know. But there was some discussion last December about the
possibility that the GMC is suited to establish a world land speed record for
class A motorhomes, especially if one were fitted with an engine tuned for
high-end power rather than low-end torque. At that time there seemed to be a lot
of interest in encouraging / supporting an effort to go for it.

Maybe everyone has come to their senses now (I hope not.)

But it's getting to be time to plan summer vacation travel and I was just
wondering if anyone needed a cheering section in, say, Utah this August. :-)

Surely some brave sole has a GMC that will top 100MPH. the guiness book of
world records is yours for the taking. thats all you have to do.

Remember the GMc motorhome still holds the class A record. The most recent
run was a class C.

I just reviewed the discussion from last December. I believe it was Terry
Skinner who was going to join SCTA, get the rules and possibly prepare a coach.

Terry, are you out there? Anything happening?

Hey Richard,

Haven't heard anything but someone needs to go out there and get the record.

I just checked the Bonneville URL at http://www.scta-bni.org/

I searched their site for motorhome and found the Motorhome record is still
open.

It seems the Chinook effort did not qualify for a record.

I thought magazine publicity suggested a record but they are listed as
running for times only.

To set a record it seems you have to be a member of one of the clubs
associated with SCTA.

I wonder what safety equipment is required for a motorhome ? Anyone have a
rule book handy ?

Before I get into making the "dumpster" pretty, it is offered to be the
speed buggy. As the %#@* that took the record away did, She is pretty
stripped. It would not take much to be ready for the muscle install!. No,
water system, no waste system, no roof stuff, no furnature, no cabinets, no
generator, no LP sytem, no TV, like I said- it's already stripped down.

The rails & frame look good and the body is straight.

I am not kidding, lets do this! I want to go to the Baloon rally in Oct..
I would be happy to ferry the racer out there for the deed and have it
available to set up the run whenever. What a hoot to show up at the rally
with the "dumpster " on steroids!

I agree that this would be a kick and quite possible to pull off, rules on tires
permitting.

If someone has already got the ball rolling I hope they let us know.

But just in case the "ball" is not yet rolling, I will commit that if, by April
30, no one has posted that they have already done so, I will join SCTA, get the
rule book, find out what class the dumpster would be in, when it would be able
to race, and what the requirements are for tires, safety equipment, etc. and let
you know promptly.

I am sure that someone has all the past info on requirements as they were
discussed here. If I remember correctly you need a roll bar and I think it
actually has to be a motor home, not stripped. Is that correct info gurus?

As for official, timed runs, Lanier can give you a couple of clocked runs he
has made in the past. Courtesy of the MHP. Just another little service
from the State of Mississippi.

OK, Lanier, what were your clockings, and was it with a stock GMC? Any
special equipment on the engine, special gears, tires, etc?

Jim, After reading your helpful and informative posts, BEFORE the run at the
record we need to download your memory bank into a computer in case, God
forbid, the Dumpster turns turtle around 200 MPH.
You are too valuable a resource to lose.

Let me be the first to volunteer for pit crew/worker.

I retired at age 50 (after 30 years in IBM) 2 years
ago and I am getting bored ---Sounds like a fun thing
to do. I'm close enough to Orlando to lend a hand for
the vehicle preparation work - and I'm very handy with
a wrench.

Let's go set a new record for GMC and break the class
C record while were at it.

Perhaps we can use my '73 Painted Desert as the
support vehicle and sleeping quarters for the team
when we go to the FLATS

P.S. I understand there is a land track used for
world speed records right here in Florida. It is my
understanding that the conditions in Utah have
deteriorated over the years - with the hard pack salt
almost gone in places -- I will try to find out more.

I remember the Rollbar discussion, but the definition of a 'Motorhome'
Never got clearly established IIRC. There were suggestions of passengers
sipping scotch at the dinnette and even one brave soul who said he'd ride
on the commode during the attempt. But if there's no commode, is that
still a motorhome?? I am still up for it( Finacially and time wise). I
wonder if the rule book clearifies this.

Jim,

Having seen the "dumpster" in all its Glory, I think it is a perfect
candidate to make the run. It's $1,000 purchase price makes it an
interesting candidate and you didn't strip it, it left the factory
stripped!

If you need a functional interior, a surplus cot, porta potti and hot
plate should take care of the home portion of being a motor home.

I think you will have plenty of support from this group. Enough people
should be able to make it to Wendover, Utah in mid August to put together a
suitable support crew for you and any others who might want to run.

At this time it looks like I can volunteer to be there for pit crew, wrench
pulling or whatever.

Jim would love to see the dumpster, and of course you. How about a presentation
on cruise controls. Also, if you decide to bring windows, hope we can help you
sell a bunch. I have already got over 60+coming and that's before may 1.
