land speed record

Chuck If you read my last post, maybe you should be the contact point for
the GMC land speed record. How about getting with Joe Mondello and working
out the details for the 1000HP engine. Could you pilot this missle? Are we
serious or not? Can the over the hill gang really ride again!

>Hey! Welcome to the zipper club. I had 4 bi pass at 43, three arteries
and the main aorta replaced with the Mamamaine Artery from the Lung, and
that was 18 years ago. I was grounded by the Naval Flight Surgeon but
finished out 36 years with the reserves. I was in Cambodia for the first
Free Election in 93 and forced to retire when I got home. I miss the smell of
>the fuel, the noise of the aircraft and visit North Island or Mira Mar when
ever I can. My wife made me get rid of the boat too! she did not like
speed and wouldn't let me go alone. I traded my Harley Davidson for two
motors and a transmission. One for the GMC valued at about 10K and one for
one of the 56's (351W). I have two 56 F-100's under construction and
>the GMC which is always in some way or another being updated. I still have
depression from loosing my job to a heart attack in 96 and that was probably
the worst thing about retirement. I see a head doctor and take lots of
pills. This email gmc list has been a true life saver for me. Up till the
computer I had a lot of acquaintances but not with the same
>interests as me. Thanks for sharing and being there. Chuck, Lompoc, CA 78

If there is a real interest I am sure that I can talk Mondello into not only
donating the engine but installing it and participating in the endeavor.

>O.K. I talked to Marlo Triet, one half of the Davenport and Triet open wheel
streamliner, holder of the land speed record For his class @ 313.515
m.p.h.Now that is fast. Just as a side note Marlo is the guy importing Mig
jets from East Europe if you want a new toy.
>Marlo said that he would talk to some of the people at S.C.T.A. and see
just what is going to be required. But he didnt see any reason why we
shouldnt give it a try. The event is held in the third week of August. That
is when the salt is dry. I would be willing to use my GMC for this Endeavor
provided I dont have to gut it or change from stock. Isnt that the idea?
Rebuilding the suspension was on the agenda anyway. If Mondello can be
talked into donating an engine this could be a doable deal you guys. What do
you think???

I will volunteer one of my transmodes - no interior, no tanks, etc so it would
be very light (ok - not as heavy) and if a roll cage was needed it would not be
a problem. I may even sponsor it if I can figure out how to tie it into our
product.

Just in case this does materialize... count me in for whatever it may be
that I can volunteer for. Even waterboy in the pits... oops, scotchboy.

I'll be glad to handle publicity. I'll be sure this thing is all over
the net and the print mag's. I've got some contacts that could help us
with sponsorships too.

This sounds like fun already!

You guys are really crazy. Guess I will fit right in with a GMC.

You forgot to add a bunch of fat old men with a 25 year old coach going to
set the record against a company sponsored coach. Can't do it. Don't think
ya'll even understand those words. Got to get one quick now so I can have
it up and running by August. Gotta date with a salt strip and a bunch of
crazy old fat guys like myself.

Roger

I think we need to know the rules first. I is possible we may change the tune.
Don't know for sure. Darren

Another question about tires...

Must we go with a 16" or greater rim, or would a 15" rim clear the calipers
and rear drums?

Richard Guthart
'77 Birchaven

15 will not clear, we may even want to look at 17, or 18 for the enhanced
gearing and or high speed tire available. Braking should not be a problem as
distances at the flat are fairly long, but a couple of chutes might come in
handy.

You fools can count on me for my pledge of 100 bucks. But nobody has
mentioned the obvious fund raising tools like GMC LSR t-shirts, hats,
jackets, pins, flags, etc, etc. All of this stuff is easy to have made
up and profits can go a long way toward helping fund this project.

The tone for this subject has certainly changed from joking to very
serious in the last couple of days. Starting to believe that this
actually could happen.

Most of the time I just sit and read all the good stuff and fluff that
appears on this site, but I have really been tickled by all the
excitement generated by this potential land speed record talk.

I really hope it isn't just talk... but August is only 8 months
away..... lots to do before then..... tell you one thing.... I will darn
sure be there!

Would pay extra to have my name on that coach, too. Like in half inch
tall letters on the side of the LSR coach.

Just Awesome even thinking about it!

If this attempt is to be taken seriously, the group must come up with a
financing strategy as well as corporate support.
Once we have figured out just exactly how much $$$ we will be able to use,
then begin hunting for a coach as well as an engine. Where does the work on
the coach get done? What are the regulations for an "official" record? Who is
in charge? are other important questions.
We need to figure out how much this will cost.

Roger,

I've been looking for the answer to that question, too. Here are some links
to some organizations that are involved in racing at Bonneville but I have
not been able to determine from these links exactly which body establishes
the categories of competition, sets the rules for the categories and keeps
the "official" world records. Surely there must be an ex-racer or race buff
on the list who knows the answer.

Richard,
Checked back to the SOB site that holds the record and found out the
http://www.scta-bni.org/ was the one who timed their event. Lots of clubs
in South California in this organization. They have the rule book and looks
where someone needs to go for information.

Roger

Probably should be someone on the west coast close to the flats and other
suppliers. It should be run there before the record attempt.

Remember the recent record was set by a class C motorhome. The GMc is a
class A. Looks like all we would have to do is show up and run twice and we
have the record for the class A.

>Well guys, this is what I have found out so far. If we show up with a stock
GMC they ( S.C.T.A.) will inspect the motorhome and tell us what class we
will be in. If we show up with a modified GMC they will still tell us what
class we will run in. Its not like they want to make a commitment over the
phone. What it looks like from here is that we show up down there this
summer with a stock GMC and give it a go. I figure the modifications being
discussed, tires, suspension overhaul, etc to make her safe at 65 will make
her safe at 120. If Mondello would like to loan us a "stock" engine to
make this run I am all for it. If Good year wants to loan us some stock
tires, I am all for that too. But the bottom line is I think we should do
this the honest way the first time. After we get our feet wet then we can
talk about modifications. For sure they are going to want a roll bar.(how do
we get it thru the door?) There are a million things going thru my mind
about this but it is just like eating an elephant. One bite at a time. After
Christmas we can get serious.

Terry,

Is S.C.T.A. sending you the rules and if so would you post them?

I mentioned this discussion to Ray Curtis of Eaton GMC and he would like to
know what modifications are permitted within the "stock" category and also
what is required in the area of safety equipment and tires.

Richard Guthart

Yes I am and yes I will. Most of the info I have gotten so far has come =
from Marlo Triet and David Larson, his machinest.
David told me a story about making some solid aluminum tires for the stre=
amliner. It took two years for the S.C.T.A. to make up thier minds as to =
the "legality"( They were outlawed.) Thought the first thing I should do =
is join the S.C.T.A. Things like this are best done from the inside. As =
fast as the info shows up here I will post it. In the mean time does anyo=
ne know how to set up a Rochester for 4000 ft and 100 degrees??
