Could someone confirm that knuckles from a 77 Tornado are compatible
with our coaches and if so do you know what size reamer is needed for
the ball joints. TIA

If you are buying new ones, we have the Moog numbers

Toronado was downsized with the 1979 model year. !977 and 1978 Steering
knucles should fit with the exception of the reaming for the ball
joints.

Mark,
I agree with you. Just bring the correct lower ball joint to a machine
shop and they will use that to select the correct tapered reamer.

Just curious - will the same vintage Eldorado knuckles work too?

Thanks JR! I know of a couple Eldos in pick-a-part yards.

Thanks to all the Knuckle replies. Found a yard with two 77 Toronados.
(also two 72's with 455's heads missing)

Front discs were optional in the early years. Probably weren't standard on
the Toro until around '70.

Tom, I have two sets of knuckles off a 66 and a 67 Toro that both had drum
brakes. Kinda strange looking things.

Thanks Dick - Wouldn't mind getting my hands on one of those "headless"
455's, but PA is a little far to go for one...

GMCers,

Since it is getting harder to find early Toros/Eldos at our local salvage
yards (especially up here in the mountains)
I was excited when I found a 73 Toronado to part out. Since I had play in my
front wheel bearings I figured on using the knuckles on my GMC, if mine
turned out to be worn.
They are worn - and so are the ones that came off the Toronado!
While I could have taken the knuckles to a local machine shop to have the
insert put in and the lower ball joint hole reamed, I felt more comfortable
getting reconditioned hubs and knuckles from Ken Thoma (they look great!)

To "make a short story boring", I guess what I'm trying to say is: get that
Eldo/Toro if you can, just keep in mind they are all 20-30 years old and the
ones that are in decent shape usually don't end up in the junk yard - so
don't pay too much!

Good point Peter. It seems like salvage yard prices have skyrocketed lately
- - these guys have figured out what a gold mine they have. Most times these
days they base their price on a percentage of retail, so you have to be
careful to get a good deal. Caveat emptor!

Ken Thoma does great work and I also want to put in a plug for the recon'd
hubs and knuckles that Alex Sirum sells. Put a pair of each on my coach -
good looking machine work!

I keep wondering why we are using Toro ball joints and booring for them
when the corrrect Moog are available and don't require future owners know
that not standard parts are in their coach ??

Gene,

You got it backwards. We're talking about using Toro steering knuckles and
boring them to accept the motorhome lower ball joint taper.

Dick, Patrick,

I paid Ken Thoma $125.00 each for the knuckles, $150.00 each for the hubs,
plus shipping (and shipping the cores back). I didn'n know Sirium had
reconditioned hubs and knuckles, I would have checked their price, too.

Gene,
I don't know about anyone else but I have a spare set of Toro knuckles
that I had reamed to accept the larger GMC lower ball joint taper. The
knuckle hub/bearing bore is usually damaged by the time you discover
that the PO didn't service the bearings properly and remanufacturing the
existing knuckles is a lot more expensive than boring out the ball joint
taper on a spare set. The Toro/Eldo disc brake knuckles are the same
part, they just need this mod to work on the GMC.
Did I answer your question or make it muddier?
Steve
