knock sensor placement

Does anybody have any experience with locating the knock sensor on a 455??

While the engine is still loose and all part parts are easily accessed (in different places), I am planning to install a knock sensor as it will never
be easier than right now.

I do not plan to install an ECM just yet, but I can build a circuit to tell me if it is knocking. I sure won't hear it these days....

On all of our new engines, they seem to mount the sensors near the main bearing "webbing" just below the heads, between the center two cylinders.

On old engine designs they usually get added in the block valley between the rear 2 cylinders. I know torque spec is critical to freq response so not
sure how you would "clamp" one on.

Matt,

John Sharpe has his knock sensor screwed into the water jacket drain plug on the driver side of the engine.

I have had one form or another of Tbi since 1993.

I have experimented with putting the sensor on the back of a head, in the cover over where the mechanical fuel pump goes, in the front motor mount and finally in the block drain hole on the passenger side of the engine.
The latter seems to work well and it has been there for several years now.

I was told to locate the knock sensor as far away from the heads and valve train as possible. The two suggested locations were the water jacket drain
plug on the lower side of the engine or drill a hole in the front motor mount and mount it there.

That is where I put mine. Passenger side drain hole. Seems to work.
