Terry, I've been using K&N filters for almost 20 years and they've always
been oil covered gauze and(according to K&N - so take it FWIW), they
actually filter better as particles accumulate. I've used them on both cars
and motorcycles with excellent results - never off-road tho', so filter
loading has never been an issue.

If you realy like the K&N Filters than you will love the filters offered by
Amsoil. They are fabricated with a fine foam filter enclosed by a course
foam filter that fits into the original container.
My experience with K&N was in desert racing and I can assure you I was
not leading the pack. There was plenty of dust back where I was. The fine
powdery dust of eastern Washington could take out a set of rings in one race
if you didn't have the proper filtration. So we used a canaster that was
coated with grease on the inside and then a paper filter inside that. the
grease would collect the heavy particals and the paper would filter the
rest. Now this wasn't a big diesel, just a little 250 Greeves that would go
fast enough to scare me. Those were good times.
