Congratulations!!

I just purchased a 1977 Transmode (something) about two weeks ago. Been
having a hell of a good time.

A good place to start is with the VIN interpretation.

FWIW: I grew up in Brady! Use to come to San Angelo for fun!

Hey all you GMCrs. My name is Paul, and I am a new owner.

Been lurking on archives for awhile. Have wanted a GMC since '75 when I
drove
a new one in Fort Worth: couldn't afford it. Bought SOB (El Dorado) in 76.
Continued to be interested in GMCs for several years waiting for the right
time & opportunity in between my other habit of restoring mid-year
corvettes.
Finally got my GMC on Monday, 04/05/99.

Have been searching for one seriously for about 9 months. Have been keeping
an eye on one stored in an equipment yard for about 4 years. Had asked 2 or
3
times the first two years--but was always told it was not for sale. It had
been hail damaged in '95, had at least two windows broken, and the elements
have done some damage. More recently I have asked some friends to get
involved to encourage the owner to sell. Thru many months of highs & lows
of
Yes & then No--finally closed the deal on Monday. Checked tires, brakes,
filled suspension, poured gas in tank/carb, started right up & drove across
San Angelo. It ran real smooth on the way to its new home. Have been
working
late nights on it. It had been used as a telephone demo/support office then
sold at auction. The next owner used it as a traveling sales office. Then
when it was damaged by hail in '95 it was parked--deteriorating ever since.

At first my wife was less than excited--she didn't think I was serious until
I
brought it home. However, she now wants input into the refurb, which is a
good sign. The refurb will be a monumental task. Have to gut interior
completely, remove several items, take out a bunch of customized stuff that
is
no good, and then build what I want--which is an updated, original. Am
looking for a lot of help.

By the way this one is a 1977 26', 455, General 16.5 tires, & dually, chrome
looking wheels, a twin bed model with some green shag carpet and green/white
fabric high back captains chairs in front. Has a three foot fiberglass
extension on the rear that I will be removing; then attempting to restore
the
inside. Does anyone out there know what model this is? Nothing is left in
glove box--it was produced Nov 1976.

Long enough first entry--nice to be an owner.

Welcome Paul !

You live in San Angelo? That ain't very far down the road from me, here at
Lake Brownwood. I think the most helpful thing you could do to start with
is subscribe to GMC Motorhomes Marketplace and the Cinnibar newsletter.
That's where all the GMC specific parts/services providers advertise.

Stephen J. Galovic III publishes the marketplace and can be contacted at
galovic . He'll send you a complimentary 1st issue and invite
you to subscribe for $30 per year. It's worth it.

GMC Motorhome Marketplace

Merrillville, IN 46410-3537

Call Cinnibar at 1-800-720-2227 and subscribe to their GMC Motorhome News
quarterly publication. It's only $10 per year.

Join GMC Motorhome International at http://www.gmcmi.com/membersh.htm .
They'll send you some good publications also, including parts interchange
lists.

There's quite a few of us that belong to the GMC Classic's Motorhome Club.
They're enjoying a rally in Eureka Springs, Arkansas right now and will
have another next August near Corpus Christi. Check their temporary web
site at: http://members.xoom.com/bmassey/gmcclassics/

I know I'm forgeting something. Holler anytime. There's a lot of real
good folks on this list and all are here to learn from and help one another.

Hope this helps

You are doing exactly what I am just completing. Mine was a rolling test
lab for the EPA and started as a '78 Transmode. I gutted it and started
over. Does yours have a bathroom module?? That was the only 'Real' GMC
interior piece I used. I purchased a used module from Alex Sirum (GREAT
source for pieces you'll need). I had to remove the back hatch to get it
in. My blessing is that my coach was in great shape mechanically and frame
wise. The EPA was religious is the maintenance. It had 51,000 documented
miles. I had to replace the exhaust and the hoses (more for my state of
mind than any other reason). Everything else inside is custom built. Let
me know if I can help. (I'll be at the Albuquerque Rally in Oct with my
coach fully complete, I hope).....th If it would help I have a list of
items that I have used in and on the coach from my recent appraisal that
you could compare to. Let me know and I'll send it private.

Paul, Welcome to the wonderful world of GMC restoration. That's both the
good news and the bad news. :-)
The colors SOUND like it might be a Palm Beach. I have a '75 and those are
the PB colors.

Paul,

To get your wife really cranked up about the refurb, take her to a GMC rally
and do the "Open House" tour. My wife's always tolerated the GMC as *my*
project(keeps me away from bars and women of ill repute), but after the
Open House at Myrtle Beach, you should have heard her chattering about what
she wanted to do to the interior of "her" coach(somehow she skipped "our"
coach). The technical stuff bores her to tears, but carpet, blinds,
cabinets..., that's another story.

Patrick

Paul... I am hosting a Rally in Albuquerque from Oct 5 to 10 during the
International Balloon fiesta. Nice way to break in your new coach. Let me know
if you are interested.
