Just what are you talking about? The restrictors that I am certain Joe
Mondello is talking about are the "Restrictors" that he puts where the
oil comes out to oil the bearings from the pan. If this is not done
then the turbulence pushes the oil into the upper part of the engine and
can result in serious engine failure. I have had three engines fail in
the lower bearing due to this. High speed (say 70 mph) pushes the oil
into the upper rockers, not where it is needed in the bearings. Talk to
me more about not working the engine with out a Thermostat. According
to my GMC books by Cinnebar you must have a thermostat to operate this
engine. Accordingly you can change the Thermostat from a tilt one to
one that goes straight up and down. A lot of discussion has taken place
on these too! One thing that has never been discussed however is one
should exercise the thermostat in a pan of water several times to be
sure it operates (opens and closes). I strongly advise before you go
without a thermostat to check it out first. If you want restrictors
find out where they go first. I do believe you will find out these
things are oil restrictors to help keep the oil in the pan and available
to oil the bearings. Thanks chuck

The restrictor to replace the thermostat with is a big washer with a hole in
it.
Mondello supplies a kit with 3 "washers". Two with a smaller opening than
the third.
