Jabsco 18590-000 mascerator pump CAUTION!!!!!

Just received a jabsco 18590-000 mascerator pump from West marine a few
minutes ago, and ordered it based on the information in this message. I am
not happy!. The pump housing does not work as explained here. Cut off the
1 1/2" inlet connection and you still have...................a 1 1/2" inlet.
It is impossible to cut off the inlet and make a 3" connection since the
pump housing is held on with 4 nuts. cut them off and the whole thing falls
apart.

Now what do I do.

I was fortunate enough to pick-up a brand new Jabsco
Macerator Pump at a local Marine Salvage shop here in
Daytona - $99 -- sorry they have no more (I checked)

Seems they got it in by mistake --

The number is 18590-0010 and it has a 3" inlet and a
1" outlet -- 12volts and 15 amps

It looks like the last three/four numbers mean more
than just the voltage

Sorry for your misfortune, Tom. I wrote a warning when the thread first started
about this 1 1/2" pump. My experience has always (almost) been that when there
is a "bargain" there is a catch.

I purchased the JABSCO pump with the 3 in inlet, thinking, like you that it
would do a better job at dealing with the solids. Again, like you, I was
surprized to find that the 3 inch spec refered to the outside of the
housing , but it had a 1 1/2 in opening in the center. After much
research and gnashing of teeth, I determined that there is nothing larger
than the 1 1/2 in opening available! Soooooo, I went ahead and used it,
but I lowered the mounting position by 1 inch to insure that it was
clearing everything it could from the holding tank. I am pleased to report
that after using the facilities with three healthy people for 1 week at the
myrtle beach rally it cleared the tank completely everytime I ran it. The
long term effect is unknown and I expech that there will be an small amount
of residue between the pump and the sleeve that I used to attach it to the
3 inch PVC pipe from the tank. By the way, after looking high and low for
the fitting I found one that was made for this specific application from
Cloverleaf RV in plainwell, MI (they have a WEB site). It was $6 IIRC.

additional information on the 18590-0010

although the pump has a 3" inlet connection -- the
housing is choked down to 1.5"

so -- actually they are functionally identical to
model 18590-000 with it's 1.5" inlet ????

Don't know if there is any other Model Number has a
wider opening and not sure if it is really needed.

I used standard schedule 40, 3 in pipe and it had was about 1/2 in too
large for the outside of the macerator, hence the search for a fitting to
connect the two. Plumbing and lumber suffer the same problem -----> a
2X4 is NOT 2 Inches by 4 inches! I am not familiar with the original pipe
as found on a factory coach.

I went to Jabsco's web site: http://jabsco.com, and they don't list the
number you got (must be dealer's method)?

Go to Jabsco's web site page for the macerator
(http://jabsco.com/pumpout.htm) and they list the 18590 macerator. If you
click on the technical data selection, a four page document comes up (note
you need Acrobat to read it, which you can download free if needed). Page 3
has an exploded view of the macerator. Is item 4 the one you say is the 3"
inlet??

If you go to page four, a drawing shows only a 1 1/2" inlet and a 1 outlet.
It also shows the OD of item 10 as 3". In looking at the picture of the
pump on page 1, it looks like it's possible for it to fit inside the end of
a 3" plastic pipe, only if the ID of the pipe is also 3".

I know it's called 3" pipe, but does anyone know what the ID is for the
drainpipe on our coach's??

Yes, it was designed to go over a '3 in pipe' and the outside of the
macerator. As I recall it was a 3 1/2 inch on one side and a 2 7/8 on the
other and used S S band clamps. I can get the specifics and post them
tomorrow if you would like... pls advise..........th

What I was referring to was the feasibility of a portion of the macerator
fitting inside and up to the end of the existing 3" pipe coming out of our
holding tank(s), not the hose we connect to drain the tank(s). At Jabsco's
web site, the picture of the inlet side of the pump motor housing looked to
me as though it possibly would fit.

Paul - are you sure its 3" pipe and not 3" hose? There is a difference. 3"
pipe refers to a threaded fitting for 3" threaded pipe (metal or plastic).
3" hose means that the 3" sewer hose that we use for our GMCs can slide over
it an be clamped in place. The opening of a 3" pipe threaded fitting will
be somewhere between the ID and OD of a 3" pipe. Is your fitting threaded?
 
I used a number of fittings to make mine work. Used a 3" radiator hose
(straight) to get from the one side of the macerator and put some bushings in
from the hardware store. I think my pictures are on Gene Fishers web page.
