Internal A/C system (New thread)

I am looking for an A/C unit that I could use INSIDE my
Transmode-to-Motorhome project Coach. I have been thinking about a small
home unit where the Evaporator is next to the furnace and uses the same
duct work. The condenser and compressor would be outside in, say, a front
wheel well. I had picked up a lead that Sanyo made such a unit, but can't
find any reference.

Any suggestions?? I am attempting to keep the exterior of my coach a
clean and devoid of things like pods, rooftop A/C, 'mushroom' vents,
stairs, etc. I want it to just slip through the air like our LSR (Land
Speed Record) idea from a few months ago.

Thom;

Sanyo, Fredrick and a number of others make what is called a split system for
commercial residential use. Cost was over $1,200 for a rather modest unit. I
looked at these and the units I found all ran on 220 volts. The other
alternative is to look at a basement model from one of the larger coaches. You
could probably pick one up used from AZ RV surplus. Let me know what you find
out in your search, as I would like to do the same, but it is not a priority
at this time.

You may want to do a net search on Air Conditioning, Split system or basement
model RV.

Try Paul Loeffler who is not only a GMC owner (one of the first stretched
coaches) but an air con expert as well. He helped to develop the improved
engine air distribution system many owners have on their pre 1977
coaches.

You can reach him at pmloeffler and ask him about his home type
aircon system. Tell him I gave you his name.

Thom,
Almost a month ago you asked where you might find an A/C unit you could
use inside your coach. I knew I had seen a picture of one, but just
could not remember which one of the many books and catalogs offered this
type of unit.

Yesterday I found the ad. Camping World catalog - Holiday edition -
page 45.

Duo-Therm 12,000 BTU heat pump that fits under seats or counters,
thermostatically controlled, blower operates manually or automatically,
weighs 70 lbs and measures 14 1/2"H x 21 1/2"D x 22"W. Part number
16082D, was on Red Tag special at $799 or $719 if you belong to
Presidents Club.

Hope you find this info helpful and if you buy this unit let me know how
you like it because I want to do the same thing.

Will 1200btu be enough for the 26' GMC and how would we duct the
condensor air to the outside? Maybe thru the floor?

Floor venting would be my first choice, which my orientation to keeping my
lady as smooth as possible. But there is seems to be these bothersome
thing caled gastanks in the way. I was originally thinking of a split unit
(like home units) that would put the compreesor any condcensor in a front
wheel well. This would get the sound and vibration away from the inside of
the coach.

And, yes, the question as to size is still unresolved. Maybe someone here
on the WEB has the experiance needed to calculate the correct amount of
cooling needed for a 26' by 8' by 6.5' tall space. I am unfamiliar with the
ratings on the standard roof mounted units. Eperiance with the cooling
capabilities for those units would be appreciated. Thx....th

My wife and I look forward to bring our lady (we NEVER use the 'beast') and
meeting Ya'all in Myrtle Beach.

Anyone have an opinion as to whether this unit could replace the gas
furnace in terms of space and would 12k btu provide enough heat for
lowest SE Florida temps of say 45F? Also could the existing furnace vents
to the side of the coach be utilized for this installation?

In my 1977 GM finished coach, the furnace is under the kitchen sink.

David I think the important question is can it heat the coach for a period
of time without the generator, ie; all night?

Total locked rotor amps - 78.0
Wire size - Up to 24' No. 12 AWG
Min. Generator - 3,500 Watt
Fuse size - 20 Amp Max.
Refrigerant Charge (R22) - 17 or 26 oz. (depends on model)

Models were 54615-035, 54615-036, (17 oz.) and 54615-045, 54615-046 (26 oz.)

Heat pumps have one thing in common. They don't work under 40 degrees. The
15K unit I have on the roof will heat 15K cooling and 12K heating. However,
if the outside temp is less than 40 it doesn't work at all. That is because
the unit will not transfer heat below that temp, and it will ruin the unit.
So if you are planning for a replacement for your heater, remember that the
unit won't really work when it is real cold.

Tom, If I still lived in upstate NY that would be the important question
but these days I seldom travel in places that get really cold.

In fact, I don't use my gas furnace anymore. I use a 5,000btu cube heater
which satisfies our needs. Also little or no dry camping anymore. So,
back to the question of will the space accommodate one of these heat
pumps.
