Interesting Crankshaft/Torque Converter Notes

I received the following today off-net. I've sanitized it slightly to
protect the guilty. I hope the author will forgive me, but it's just
too good to keep under my hat. This old dragon has been flushed into
the open - it's time to spear it one last time.

Before we go spend some more money, I'd like to hear any logical desenting
views to what Patrick quoted;

Since we do all our downshifting with the lever (bad solenoid), I'm worried
about adding stress to our old oem tranny. Besides the money, is there some
reason we should not fix the downshift function.

And then a second question; if we're going in to replace the solenoid,
would this be the right time to also put in the shift kit?
