Interesting Article on Ethanol

There is not an investment that I can think of that is worse than a new
automobile from the dealership. Talk about a lose/lose deal, that is top of
the heap. I have purchased three new cars in my lifetime.
A brand new 1964 Volkswagen beetle. $1758.90 with a Blaupunkt am
radio in the back seat in a box.
When the PT Cruiser was first introduced, we put $1000.00 down and
waited a year for our Inferno Red 5 speed with touring suspension. You
don't want to know how much money that cost. My wife took it to the
dealership to have a 50,000 mile service, and came home with a Candy
Tangerine 2003 Dream Cruiser. Every bell and whistle option you could pile
on. Still have that car. It was my first wife Mary's daily driver until she
died. I can't bring myself to part with it, yet. It has all the faults
corrected that the first one had. Really well matched automatic
transmission to the power curve of that 2.4 liter turbocharged, fuel
injected 220 horsepower engine.
Goes like a pocket rocket. Has enough power to get you in trouble on
wet roads if you are stupid. (Which I profess to be) in performance
oriented machinery. Best hot rod I have ever had.

The idea that 10% ethanol gives a 10% reduction in mileage is faulty. It would be correct only if the ethanol produced 0 mpg. You will get 90% of
boat gas mileage plus 10% of the ratio of boat gas to ethanol, whatever that may be.

Johnny,

I am not calling you a liar, but would you like to see my fuel logs of years ago when I was still recording the amount of Eoh in each fuel purchase
the resulting burn of that fill?
In the case of my coach, it was just about mathematical that the non-alcohol part was all that contributed to pulling Chaumière down the road. This
came very close to agreeing with what we found a Michigan Automotive Research early in the "Gasohol" days.

I will admit that this does go contrary to what should be as far as stoichiometric flame chemistry, when I went to publish an SAE paper on the
subject, I was slapped down and no explanation was forthcoming.

We did find at that time, that one had to mis-tune the test engines to get cleaner exhaust with the "gasohol" as fuel. There was also a corresponding
reduction in performance with said mis-tune.

That would only be true if engines would run exactly the same with 100% gasoline and with an ethanol mixture.
They do not. Whether it is the flame, the expansion of the burning mixture or the internal cylinder temperature or something else there is a difference. I have run actual tests and have found that a ten percent mix of ethanol in my Motorhome results in about 10% less miles achieved on 10 gallons of fuel than straight gasoline. That comes to 10% less mileage so I don’t agree with you.

I see both of yall's points. Gasohol only reduces my 26' slightly - not 10% - but it has an MSD injection system which may do a better job with
alcohol than a Qjet. That was with the Jasper Junque which got lousy mileage anyway until it lunched. I have had enough miles on the Beaver Power to
get an average due to covid, gas prices, and other situations.

The E10 seems to delay the peak cylinder pressure “early spike” and thereby quell the high load rattle on my 455. Unfortunately we are almost
always in a “high load” set of conditions relative to the Toronado. This delay is not great for converting to rotational motion as effectively.
But some efficiency is recouped by adding timing, which it will tolerate in greater amounts than with E0 87. Perhaps my bad experience with E0 coming
home from Amana was not an accurate test based on one sample but it was not good. Driving any distance out of the way to seek out E0 on gasbuddy will
result in a net loss of economy and my time, so I usually end up with convenient truck stop E10

I should of said haven't had in the post above.

I normally buy whatever's cheap on the road when I'm going to run most of it out, and fill it with boat gas when I get home and park it.

I bought my first new one since 1988 a year or so ago - new Soul S. 2020 model, 6 miles on the clock, and the dealer wanted it off the lot (Just
before the shortage hit). By the time he added in the military rebate from Kia, he got it into my budget. I've been happy with it except for oil
useage which is about twice what the 2012 Soul uses... and the '12 has just under 200K miles at this point. Needs new struts which are cheap and easy
to install, don't hafta remove the springs or compress them.
I left the baseplate and lights on the 2012 which I gave to our daughter. When I take the GMC I swap cars with her since the 2020 isn't towable 4
down.
