This is true. You can use a regular factory manifold or go with an
aftermarket intake, but you must raise the engine cover to allow
clearance. I think Zak did this with his 230.

Yes, we went with the aftermarket intake and had to raise a section of the
engine cover. The section is roughly a 1.5 foot square in the middle of
the engine cover just big enough to allow the air cleaner assembly to rise
up into it. Therefore, the smallest projection would actually be circular
but would be more difficult to produce. The height is only about 3 to 4"
and does not make it much harder to remove the engine cover or gain access
to the front seats. This was for an Edelbrock Performer intake. I don't
know if the Torker or any of the other aftermarket intakes are taller or not.

Some intake manifold height info. The distance from the top of lifter
valley end rail on the block to the carb mounting base on the intake
manifold is as follows:

Standard Olds Big-block 455 = 2.75 inches
Toro 425 / GMC 455 = 2.125 inches

Edlebrock Performer & Torker = 4.5 inches
Offy Low-Profile = 3.5 inches
Offy Super-Sonic & Port-o-Sonic = 5.0 inches
